Evaluating the Raiders' QB race

The battle for the Iolani starting quarterback job is still a three-man race after the Raiders' first two games.

Tai-John Mizutani, Jarin Yokogawa and Jake Smotherman have all turned in solid performances when they lineup behind center. The three signal callers are vying for the chance to fill the vacancy left by two-time All-Hawaii Division II second-team quarterback Austin Jim On, who coincidentally beat out senior quarterback Easton Tsubata while Jim On was a junior.

Here is each of their individual stats after the first two contests:

Mizutani: 12 of 18 passing for 185 yards
Yokogawa: 11 of 19 passing for 74 yards and two touchdowns
Smotherman: 6 for 15 passing for 78 yards and one touchdown

Even though the depth chart is still muddled, Iolani coach Wendell Look believes the competition will bring out the best out of the three quarterbacks.

"I think it's healthy," said Look. "It's making all three of them better. They cannot afford to have off days or off practices. We're going to let it play out. Competition, that's what athletics is all about. We'll see how it plays out and we'll make a decision soon."

The Raiders rotated quarterbacks after each series in their 37-0 win over Kealakehe and saw great results. Iolani was able to punch in a score on each of the team's first three possessions and jumped out to an early 17-0 lead.

"We created a pretty good tempo for ourselves," Look said on his team's hot start. "We made good decisions and we executed."

Mizutani got the start for the Raiders against the Waveriders and benefitted from a balanced play-call on the team's opening series. While he has not thrown for a score yet on the season, Mizutani seems confident on his throws to the outside receiver and has stretch the ball downfield the most, averaging over 15 yards per completion. The 6-foot-1 sophomore also hooked up with two-time All-Hawaii Division II first-team receiver Keoni-Kordell Makekau for a 29-yard pickup down the left sideline early in the game.

Yokogawa has thrown for the least yards on the most pass attempts between the three, but might be the precise passer of the bunch. The 5-foot-11 junior currently leads the team in touchdown passes, having thrown two to slotback Conor Hannum against Kealakehe. His first touchdown was on a great read and pump fake on a curl-flat concept and his second score of the game came on a quick slant inside the red zone.

Smotherman was the third quarterback to take the field against the Waveriders and looks to the boldest thrower out of the three. He was able to move the ball down the field in spurts and isn't afraid to make a tough throw. However, Smotherman has a habit of holding the ball too long and took two sacks in the red zone. He was able to redeem himself after the second sack with a scoring strike to Hannum in the back right corner of the end zone.

"I think they all have their own strengths," Look said on his trio of quarterbacks. "All three of them bring different things to the table. We just got to see which one is going to be the one that's going to get us in a good rhythm and manage the game."

The Raiders should be naming their starter after the conclusion of their final non-league game against Oahu Interscholastic Association opponent Farrington, the sixth-ranked team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division I Football Power Rankings. The Governors' defense should on the same level of the likes of Punahou, Saint Louis and Kamehameha, teams that Iolani will have to face twice in the rugged Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
