Pac-Five paid a visit to Kaimuki's campus for a controlled scrimmage between the Wolfpack and Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.
The match went for about 100 plays as each team managed one touchdown.
Below are some things that I noticed.
— From the outside looking in, Pac-Five backup quarterback Ryan Johnson might push incumbent Kainoa Ferreira for the starting job. Ferreira tossed two interceptions, one of which was returned for a score, while Johnson tossed a late touchdown pass to Kapena Fitzgerald in the back left corner.
— One advantage that Kaimuki will have over most Division II teams is lineman. The Bulldogs are loaded in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Billy Masima (6-foot-2, 215-pounds) showed promise as an edge rusher while Sage Valeho (5-foot-9, 312-pounds) and Sisifo Lauvao (6-foot-1, 203 pounds) anchor the offensive line.
— The Bulldogs didn't show too much of their standard plays, opting instead to work on plays that weren't working in their Thursday night scrimmage against Waipahu. Most of the plays consists of run plays up the middle and screens. The most effective play that Kaimuki used Saturday was quick tosses to the half back out of the shotgun.
— Pac-Five's linebacker corps make up for their small statures with great pursuit to the ball and fundamental tackling. Kaimuki could not muster much yards after a catch and/or contact.
