Kamehameha sweeps track & field championships

In track and field, the relay involves the handing off of the baton.

So it was symbolic that Kamehameha senior Dylan Kane was a member of the Warriors' 4-by-100-meter record relay team at Friday's Interscholastic League of Honolulu track and field championships at Kunuiakea Stadium.

The Warriors quartet of Keola Pedrina, Justin Desaki, Noah Sua-Godinet and Kane came in at 42.64 seconds, breaking the 2011 mark of 42.83 set by Saint Louis, which included Marcus Mariota, Jared Tomaszek, Duke Bukoski and Jeremy Tabuyo. Just when Mariota is leaving Oregon for the NFL Tennessee Titans, Kane, a receiver/defensive back, will be an incoming freshman for the Ducks this fall.

The record was just one highlight of Kamehameha's sweep of the ILH team championships. The boys' tallied 167 points to runner-up Punahou's 154, while the girls amassed 163.5 points to second-place Punahou's 124.

"It's amazing," said Kane, who knew that Mariota was part of that record relay team. "All the things he's accomplishing, now to think that our team was faster than their team."

It wasn't the only 2011 meet record to be broken. Iolani senior Lindsey Combs shattered the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.4 seconds, beating the previous mark of 44.64 set by Punahou's Julia Brand in 2011.

"It feels really good," said Combs, tearing up upon learning of the record. "I was shooting for that ever since last year. It feels go to have finally made it…it means a lot more to know that I have the record because it means I was the best of all time. it's really validating."

Combs came within four-one-hundredths of a second of claiming the 100-meter hurdles record of 14.91 seconds set in 2013 by Iolani's Abrianna Johnson-Edwards.

Combs also was a member of the Raiders' 4-by-400-meter relay team, which came in second originally. Punahou crossed the line first, but was disqualified as one of its runners ran on the lane's line, according to meet officials.

Besides the record relay, Kamehameha got a boost from senior Kayson Smith-Bejgrowicz, who won the long jump (22 feet, .75 inches), triple jump (44-09.25) and high jump (6-02.00).

"It's amazing," Smith-Bejgrowicz said. "It just goes to how much my coaches, my teammates and everyone else who push me and make me better. I can't thank everyone enough."

Kano Kruse took the two distance races: 1,500 (4:02.88) and 3,000 (9:27.01).

Another triple winner was Hawaii Baptist Academy freshman Madison Moku. She captured the three sprints: 100 meters (12.77 seconds), 200 (26.33) and 400 (58.74). She accounted for all of HBA's 30 team points, which landed her school fourth.

"I really worked hard for it," Combs said. "I thank all my coaches, my dad. My parents helped me get to where I am today."

Ironically, Smith-Bejgrowicz's and Moku's parents were star athletes at opposite alma maters. Smith-Bejgrowicz's mother, Shauna Bejgrowicz, was an all-star athlete for the Eagles and Moku's father, Sam, was a mulit-sport star for the Warriors and later for the University of Hawaii. The elder Moku also is Kamehameha's former track coach.

The younger Moku remembers tagging along with her dad to track practice at the same site of Friday's championships. She recalled playing in the sand of the long-jump pits.

"He would bring me and I started out playing in the sand pits," Madison Moku said. "Then I started to run. Then in seventh grade, I really liked this; I would run summer track. I really liked it."

Meanwhile, Kamehameha's girls dominated the field events. Shantel Aleki won the shot put (36 feet, eight inches), Kayla Afoa claimed the long jump (16-05.50), Reyn Akiu took the triple jump (35-10.75) and Cassidy Apo captured the high jump (5-00.00). The Warriors also won the 4-by-100 relay with Mikiala Maio, Afoa, Kaohu and Sarah Lau with a time of 50.62 seconds.

"Since inter(mediate) time, we've had a lot of field-event people," Apo said. "I know for girls, there's a lot of volleyball players and that's why they take up a lot of the jumps. But the field event people really do work hard. We're always competing against each other."
