SAND ISLAND— Shearyna Labasan pitched a complete game and threw 11 strikeouts as fourth-ranked Maryknoll stepped up on defense to smother top-ranked Kamehameha, 2-0 to hand the Warriors their first Interscholastic League of Honolulu loss on Wednesday afternoon at Sand Island Park.

Maryknoll (8-1-1) currently sits in first place followed by Kamehameha (8-1-1) and Punahou (8-1), who each have one loss in the ILH standings.

"We didn't do that bad, but I told my girls that we were a little flat, but I'd rather lose now than be like Kentucky and lose one when it really counts," said James Millwood.

The Lady Spartans and Warriors played to a 6-all tie back on Mar. 18 and it fueled Maryknoll to work extra hard.

"We worked extremely hard on the situations that were right in front of us. We knew it was going to be a defensive game and pitching duel and knew they were going to come in and bunt so we defended all of that. We told the girls they have to work harder than anybody else to win this game and it paid off," said John Uekawa.

The Warriors, who were averaging just over 12 runs in their first nine ILH games, were held scoreless for the first time this season.

"We faced a hot pitcher and we didn't hit the ball and that's what we've been living on this season and scoring a lot of runs and we didn't score any today. Give Shearyna Labasan and a lot credit and defensively her team backed her up and made nice plays too," said Millwood.

Labasan allowed two hits in the first two innings, but buckled down to shut down the Warriors for the next three innings. In the bottom of the second, Jordan Millwood singled to centerfield, but Labasan proceeded to strike out six-straight Warrior batters in the second and third innings. She struck out the side in the top of the fifth and allowed only one hit in the top of the sixth as Rachel Ogasawara hit a double to right field.

"We didn't hit and a lot had to do with her. She kept us off balanced and we didn't get runners in scoring position and cash in when we needed to," said Millwood.

Kasey Magdadaro went 1-for-2 and her 2RBI double in the bottom of the second brought in the only runs for the game to score Nohea Hee and Tamia Hirano. Hee went 2-for-3 and a double and Hirano went 1-for-3 and a double.

"She has been making good contact and putting the ball in play. She goes unnoticed in that eighth spot, but we know her capabilities," said Uekawa.

"I was deep in the count and was expecting outside and waited on it and I wanted to make solid contact," said Magdadaro, on the hit.

The Lady Spartans committed three fielding errors for the game while the Warriors had two.

"This was a very good team win and Ryna can't win all of our games for us so we have to back her up. We made errors but today we picked each other up and had each others' backs," said Magdadaro.

Kamalani Dung threw six strikeouts, walked one batter and allowed four hits.

Kamehameha will play at Punahou on Saturday, Apr. 11 at 10 a.m. while Maryknoll will host Iolani (2-8) on the same day and time.

"We got ourselves here and we can't let ourselves down so we have to work harder," said Uekawa.
