A gritty performance helped Iolani edge out Saint Louis, 49-43 in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I matchup at Saint Louis' McCabe Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Saint Louis won 35-31 on Jan. 10 at Iolani, and since the loss the Raiders have gone 4-1 to improve to 5-2. The Crusaders dropped their third-straight game to fall to 3-4.

Kamu Borden led Iolani with 10 points and seven rebounds, Zach Gelacio added eight points and Robby Mann and Hugh Hogland chipped in seven points each.

"We're fortunate enough to have two bigs. Hugh picked up some unfortunate fouls, but Kamu came in, it was different. But as a team, we didn't miss a beat," said Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto.

"I tried to be aggressive and tried to get every rebound I can. If have a chance to score, I'll take it. I set screens a lot to get my teammates open too and do what I can," said Borden.

Iolani took a 11-2 lead after Bryson Hamada kicked it out to Pikai Winchester for a left corner 3-pointer and the Crusaders called a timeout at 3:35. Jaymason Nunuha hit two consecutive 3-pointers as Saint Louis trailed 12-8 heading into the second quarter. The Crusaders shot 3 of 13 from the field and was 2 of 6 from the 3-point line.

"I think we came out ready to play and we had a lot of activity and had an attacking mentality and I think that's why we were up 11-2 early," said Shimamoto.

"I told them to be aggressive on offense, but I thought we settled for too many 3's in the beginning," said Saint Louis coach Keith Spencer.

Drew Kobayashi scored in the lane from an inbound pass as the Crusaders trailed by four, 14-10. The Raiders went on a 9-0 run, Hogland's and-1 put Iolani up, 23-10 and Saint Louis called a full timeout with 2:07 left. The Crusaders scored six straight points, Jimmy Nunuha III's coast-to-coast layup beat the buzzer as Saint Louis trailed, 24-16 going into halftime.

"At halftime I told them,'we have to be more aggressive and go to the basket'. We didn't attempt any free throws in the first half. That's our strength—going to the basket and we got away from that in the first half and got too perimeter," said Spencer.

Iolani shot 10 of 19 (52.6 percent) from the field in the first half.

"We wanted it, we came out strong," said Borden. "It was attacking and getting to the basket."

The Crusaders scored four straight points to start the third, but Gelacio hit a 3-pointer to make it 27-20 and the Raiders took a 30-second timeout. Following the timeout, Saint Louis went on a 8-3 run, Nunuha III's 3-pointer cut the deficit to 30-28. Borden's field goal from the right block before the buzzer gave Iolani a 33-28 lead going into the fourth.

"Third quarter offensively we had some problems, we had some guys get into foul trouble. It changed us for a bit, but it's good to grind one out," said Shimamoto.

"Kamu did a good job tonight, he got some of those putbacks. We didn't have that tonight, in the first game we played them, we had some nice putbacks for us. Tonight we didn't have that," said Spencer.

Kevin Marks came off the bench to score 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter for Saint Louis. He went 3 of 5 from the free throw line and his 3-pointer near the top of the arc cut the deficit to 39-36 and had another 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds left.

"Kevin feels comfortable coming off the bench so some guys feel better that way. Kevin came tonight, but we need other guys to come out and step up their game," said Spencer.

In the final 1 minute 39 seconds, the Raiders took control and sank 10 of 13 free throws to close out the game. Iolani shot 15 of 24 (62.5 percent) overall.

"By our standard it was terrible all night. You feel lucky to win a game where you shoot free throws that poorly. So it's something we focus on a lot and it's something we have to focus on more," said Shimamoto, on the free throw shooting.

Saint Louis outscored Iolani, 27 to 15 in the second half. Nunuha III scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds and Jayce Smalley hauled in nine rebounds.

Iolani will host Kamehameha (2-5) on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.

"We're trying to keep it one game at a time, we have to get back to work tomorrow and hope to keep it going," said Shimamoto.

Saint Louis will have to shake off the loss quickly as they prepare for No. 2 Punahou (6-1) on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m.

"I told the kids we can't feel sorry for ourselves, we have to step up and get ready for the next day and move on. If we dwell on it, it's going to be a long night at Punahou," said Spencer.
