The boys basketball season gets underway with three preseason tournaments on Oahu this week.
The James Alegre Invitational runs from Wednesday through Saturday at Radford's Alegre Gymnasium. The field is headlined by reigning Division I state champion Iolani and the team it beat in the title game, Farrington. Other participating teams are Leilehua, Mililani, Moanalua, Punahou, Saint Louis II, Honokaa, Radford and Hayward (Calif.).
Over at Kailua, the Surfrider Holiday Classic will include an eight-team field that features perennial Maui Interscholastic League-power Baldwin, as well as Saint Louis and Saint Francis from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Other teams are Waipahu, Roosevelt, Waianae, Iolani II and host, Kailua. The tournament starts Thursday and continues through Saturday
Finally, the Black & Gold Classic will also take place Thursday through Saturday at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium and includes an eight-team field that is headlined by Division I state contenders Kalaheo and Maryknoll, as well as Kalani, last year's D2 state runner-up. Other participating teams are Kaimuki, Campbell, Kapolei, University and McKinley.
