Lahainaluna's Filikitonga-Lukela, Hafoka lead top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Makoa Filikitonga-Lukela, Lahainaluna football
Whether it's on offense or defense, Makoa Filikitonga-Lukela is always contributing for the No. 1-ranked Lahainaluna football team.

Filikitonga-Lukela did a little bit of everything Saturday night — accounting for four of the Lunas' seven touchdowns — in a dominating 52-7 win over Kamehameha-Hawaii. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior ran for two touchdowns, passed for another and had a 66-yard pick-6 for good measure.

The Lunas had their way with the Warriors, especially in the first half when they scored on their first six offensive possessions. Co-head coach Garret Tihada said with each defensive takeaway — there were Kamehameha-Hawaii interceptions for the game and four in the first half alone — there was momentum building.

"There was a lot of momentum," Tihada said. "We were hoping we wouldn't punt — I mean, we had to punt a few times — but we went into the game telling the kids that if we don't punt, we're going to win and we were very, very fortunate that it just worked out that way in the first half."

With his team already ahead 10-0 midway through the first quarter, Filikitonga-Lukea added to the lead with his 14-yard quarterback keeper up the middle on a third-and-2.

Two possessions later, he capped another Lahainaluna drive with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Josten Saribay, who got behind a pair of Kamehameha-Hawaii defenders. That score was set-up by a 42-yard pass from Filikitonga-Lukea to Jared Rocha-Islas just one play earlier.

Just two plays later, Filikitonga-Lukea picked off a pass while playing defense and maneuvered his way though traffic along the right sideline to the end zone.

"What I enjoy in this game of football that I play is giving the opportunity for my teammates to have touchdowns," Filikitonga-Lukela said. "I'm trying to give everyone else an opportunity to score somehow with (my) running and passing — or returning an interception for a touchdown."

Filikitonga-Lukela added a 4-yard touchdown run minutes into the second half and finished with seven carries for 74 yards.

The Lunas' run-heavy wing-T offense limits Filikitonga-Lukela's number of pass attempts per game — they ran on 39 of their 48 plays from scrimmage — but Filikitonga-Lukea was efficient nonetheless. His first pass of the game was dropped by an open receiver and he overthrew his intended target on his next two tosses, but connected of his final six attempts — to five different receivers — and finished with 100 yards though the air.

Filikitonga-Lukela will play his final prep game when the Lunas meet Iolani in the title game of the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Football State Championships, 4 p.m. Friday at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

Female Athlete of the Week: Folau Hafoka, Lahainaluna
While the Lunas' football team garnered much of the attention over the weekend at War Memorial Stadium back on Maui, Folau Hafoka and the Lady Lunas made some noise of their own on the hardwood over on the east side of Oahu.

The senior post scored 21 points in three games of the Ted Fukushima Girls Basketball Invitational at Kaiser High School Gymnasium, but more importantly, provided a strong presence in the painted area in support of guard's Fiamea Hafoka and Cameron Fernandez, who combined for 104 points in the tourney.

As a scorer however, Folau Hafoka got a chance when it matter most against Punahou and came up clutch, hitting a big shot plus the foul in the post with two Buffanblu defenders on her to set the tone on the first possesion of the extra period. She added the bonus free throw to stretch the margin to 3, keying the Lunas' victory over the defending Division I champions.

"It was huge. I know we needed it as a team," said Hafoka of the win. "We could have lost (that game), but I guess we came back and we wanted it so bad."

Hafoka finished with 5 points against Punahou.

Despite the loss of four players Lunas' squad that reached the title game a year ago, both Hafoka and Lahainaluna head coach Todd Rickard have high hopes for the team in 2014-15.

"We lost a lot of offensive players, but I think feel confident this year knowing who we got. I'm pretty sure we're going to do well this year," said Hafoka.

"I think its brought us more together, made us learn to play more like a team," said Rickard echoing Hafoka's sentiment. "Everything that we do is based on team. Team concepts, and I think they are getting a good understanding of how that works."

A strong showing in a tournament laden with state tournament-caliber teams was a big confidence booster for Hafoka and the rest of the Lady Lunas.

"This (tournament) has definitely motivated us. Now we know what we're capable of doing," said Hafoka.
