HBA sweeps Lancers to win ILH D2

Kanoelani Yadao spiked 11 kills last night to help Hawai'i Baptist sweep visiting Sacred Hearts, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 and win its fourth Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II girls volleyball championship in the past five years.

The Eagles finished 12-1 in league play and earned the ILH's top seed and first-round bye in next week's DII state tournament. The Lancers, who forced last night's winner-take-all match with a four-set victory over HBA on Tuesday, fell to 10-4 and will begin state tournament play in Wednesday's first round.

Saint Francis (9-2) landed the league's third state berth and also will begin play in Wednesday's first round.

Tiffany Thompson served a five-point run to help Hawai'i Baptist take a 7-2 lead in last night's first set, and after Sacred Hearts later closed it to 19-16, Lauren Sonomura served three straight points to stretch the lead to 23-16.

After Shawna-Lei Santos served a five-point run to help the Lancers overtake the Eagles at 21-18 in Game 2, CJ Asuncion got a kill and served two points to tie it at 21-21. Kimberly Kadomoto later served three straight points -- including an ace -- to close out the set and give HBA a 2-0 match advantage.

The Eagles took leads of 4-1, 11-6 and 16-11 in Game 3, and Asuncion's cross-court kill ended the match to clinch the title for Hawai'i Baptist.
