Menes, Mules highlight OIA Red quarterfinals

There's a lot of history between Moanalua and Leilehua. It's just that none of it is recent.

The No. 9 Na Menehune will visit the No. 3 Mules in a quarterfinal of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red tournament, 7 p.m. Friday at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. The game will be aired on OC 16.

The Mules dominate the series, 21-0, but the last time the two teams met was 1996.

In other quarterfinals 7 p.m. Friday, defending OIA champion and No. 10 Mililani will play No. 1 Farrington at Roosevelt and Waianae will visit No. 2 Kahuku.

In a quarterfinal 6 p.m. Saturday, Aiea will travel to No. 4 Campbell.

Losers of the quarterfinals are done for the season. The winners advance to the semifinals. Only the top three will earn Division I state berths.

Moanalua (5-4) vs. No. 3 Leilehua (7-0-1), 7 p.m. at Leilehua's Hugh Yoshida Stadium; Mililani vs. Leilehua JV, 4:30 p.m.

The fact these teams haven't met in more than a decade adds a mystique to the game.

Since a season-opening tie with Alaska power Service, the Mules have pretty much dominated the West. They were seriously threatened by rival Mililani two weeks ago, but otherwise the Mules had the only offense that was consistent in the West.

Quarterback Kenan Sadanaga led the Red with 234.5 yards per game and 21 TDs in a division where most of the teams had strong defenses. But how will he fare against Na Menehune? There wasn't much separating Moanalua from the top three teams in the East. It lost to Farrington (28-24), Kahuku (14-7) and Kailua (7-3) by an average of five points.

Moanalua has one of the best passers in the Red in Dillon Turk, who averaged 164.7 yards in conference play. But his line must keep at bay defensive end Penitito Melei, who has at least seven sacks this season.

The Mules also have one of the better kickers in the state in Tim Momiyama, who has the pop for touchbacks on kickoffs and range for field goals. He easily kicked a 50-yard PAT after two 15-yard penalties were assessed against the Mules after a TD earlier this season.

No. 10 Mililani (4-5) vs. No. 1 Farrington (8-0), 7 p.m. at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium; Farrington vs. Campbell JV, 5 p.m.

The Trojans appear to be finding their stride and could not have picked a better time. They've averaged 34.7 points per game their last three games. Quarterback Jarin Morikawa leads all D1 passers with 2,279 yards and his 21 TDs are only second to Sadanaga's 27 (overall). But Mililani will be facing one of the better defenses in the East, as Farrington has allowed 9.8 points per game.

Farrington's offense is no slouch either. It was held to under 25 points only once, in a 14-7 win against Kahuku. Running back Tyler Taumua is the only 1,000-yard rusher (1,227) in D1.

The Governors lead this series, 5-2, but in OIA quarterfinals, they are 2-2. The Trojans won last year's quarterfinal meeting, 21-14.

Waianae (4-5) vs. No. 2 Kahuku (7-1), 7 p.m. at Kahuku's Carleton E. Weimer Athletic Field; Aiea vs. Kahuku JV, 5 p.m.

The Red Raiders lead this series, 24-21-3, but they have dominated their meetings with the Seariders the past decade. When Kahuku beat Waianae, 26-0, in preseason, it was the Red Raiders' 10th consecutive win against the Seariders. In the OIA playoffs, Kahuku leads, 8-5.

The Seariders are led by sophomore QB Kekoa Kaluhiokalani, who has improved steadily since the season started. But he will be facing one of the stingiest defenses in Kahuku, which has allowed more than one TD only once and it cost it its only loss (14-13 to Farrington).

The Red Raiders' offense is anchored by RB Aofaga Wily, who has been limited by injuries early in the season. But he appears to gaining his stride, as he is coming off three consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

Aiea (4-5) at No. 4 Campbell (7-1), 6 p.m.

The teams only played two weeks ago during the regular season finale, with Campbell rallying to a 22-18 win.

This will be a battle of defenses. Aiea's defense was the reason it beat Kailua in last week's opening round. It stopped a potential go-ahead 2-point conversion try by the Surfriders, who recovered an Aiea fumble in their end zone for a touchback before scoring on an 80-yard TD pass to pull within 13-12, the final score.

Aiea's defense nearly won it against Campbell. Na Alii scored three TDs in a span of 25 seconds, the last two on fumbles recovered by LB Douglas Tautua.

Aiea's offense still lacks the consistency to fully take advantage of its fleet-footed defense. Defensive end Max Maafala-Maiava is seemingly in on every play along with LB Jholy Mauai.

The Sabers' defense has been just as effective. Campbell's LBs - Giovanni Stevenson, Solomon Leaeno, Donovan Poniatowski and Faamanuiaga Vee - are all quick-strikers who prevent big plays. The Sabers also have at least 20 interceptions this season.

Aiea leads the series, 18-8, but this is the first time the teams are facing each other in postseason.

Moanalua at Waianae (JV), 2 p.m. Saturday
