HALAWA — KJ Pascua ran for a career-high 187 yards and five touchdowns as Iolani raced past Pac-Five, 62-19, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.
The Raiders, who are ranked second in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division II Football Power Rankings, amassed 484 yards of total offense, including 316 rushing, to improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the ILH. It was the most points ever scored by an Iolani team in a single game.
"I thought we played pretty well," Raiders' coach Wendell Look said.
Pascua carried 20 times and scored on runs of 39, 19, 3, 7 and 7 yards, while Storm Lotomau added 121 yards on 16 rushes with scores of 2 and 52 yards.
"It's becoming that we can run the ball a little bit, so that makes it a little easier," Look said. "Those two kids — Pascua and Lotomau — they've become a pretty good duo."
The Raiders, who entered the game averaging 186 rushing yards per game, averaged 7.5 yards per rush Friday.
"Being able to run the ball is a big part of our identity," said Pascua, a 5-foot-5, 157-pound sophomore. "Our (offensive) line is a lot bigger than before and it's a big help to our team to be able to move the ball and help us win games."
Look agreed with Pascua's assessment, but also noted improvement by both backs as key factors for the Raiders' flourishing ground game.
"I think if you talk to him he'll give credit to his line," Look said of Pascua. "There were some puka's in there. They run hard, their vision is the thing that's getting better. They're seeing it, they're cutting a little bit better, so I was pleased with that."
All three of Iolani's first-quarter offensive possessions resulted in touchdowns.
The Raiders held a 21-0 lead before the Wolf Pack got on the board early in the second quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Kainoa Ferreira to Sean Kinel. However, Iolani scored 28 unanswered points before halftime, which included a pair of touchdown passes thrown by Austin Jim On. He hit Keoni-Kordell Makekau for a 10-yard score and two possessions later connected with Conner Ohira for a 9-yard touchdown.
Iolani's 48-6 lead at halftime held until Pac-Five got a 60-yard fumble return for a score by Casey Nakamura, who also intercepted a pass in the loss.
The Wolf Pack added a score in the fourth quarter on a 79-yard touchdown strike from Ferreira to Jarrod Infante, who finished with game-highs of 10 receptions for 158 yards. Ferreira finished with 290 passing yards on 21-of-38 passing. He was intercepted once.
Pac-Five, No. 9 in the D2 Power Rankings, fell to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.
