All 20 non-league high school football games have been canceled in wake of the threats from Hurricanes Iselle and Julio.
Department of Education superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi announced at a press conference Thursday morning that all schools on Oahu and Kauai would be closed Friday. On Wednesday, Maui and the Big Island had already decided to cancel school on those days.
The public-school closure does not allow for extra-cirricular activities, such as athletics, to take place until the schools reopen.
A little after 2 p.m. Thursday, the Iolani School athletic department confirmed both games of the 51st Father Bray Classic Saturday at Aloha Stadium were also canceled. Kalani was to play Pac-Five in the first game, while Kamehameha-Maui was slated to take on Iolani in the nightcap.
The schedule below highlights games that have been confirmed to be canceled.
Damien's game against Kauai at Vidinha Stadium on Saturday is tentatively postponed. Both teams have an open weekend later this month and could reschedule, Damien spokesman Pat Bigold said.
The last time a large slate of games were postponed by weather was on Friday, Sept. 11, 1992, when Hurricane Iniki swept through Kauai and parts of Oahu. Postponements by the OIA and ILH were not made until the morning of the games. Both leagues were able to makeup the games later in the season. But Kauai was severely affected and without power for about a month. A third of the KIF football schedule was canceled. The MIL and BIIF were not affected and their games were played.
The last time games were postponed in season was, ironically, on the same date in 2001. The terrorist attacks, like the Kennedy assassination in 1963, brought a stop to high school athletics in Hawaii.
ScoringLive will provide updates as it receives them.
