Male Athlete of the Week: Micah Ma'a, Punahou volleyballMicah Ma'a has done a little bit of everything for the Punahou boys' volleyball team this season. The junior proved his worth once again last week, leading the the Buffanblu to their third consecutive state championship.
In the title match, top-seeded Punahou defeated third-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii in four sets at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena Saturday night. The scores were 25-21, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-16. Ma'a had 20 kills and 25 blocks — both team-highs — and two blocks in the win.
"Micah has been a huge part of our success all year," Buffanblu coach Rick Tune said. "He led our team in kills this year, he's one of our top guys in aces, digs blocks — he's just a complete volleyball player — and the best thing about him is his motor is always going. He doesn't stop, he doesn't tire."
Tune said that Ma'a had struggled with injuries and a respiratory infection earlier this season, but never let it deter him.
"I think what he does best is he pushes himself to excellent and that has rubbed off on our guys this year," Tune said. "I feel fortunate to have him for one more year and hopefully his work ethic will continue to rub off on with the group of guys he'll work with next year."
Ma'a is a six-rotation player for the Buffanblu and almost never leaves the court.
"Quite honestly, he could play any position on the court — could play middle if he wanted to," Tune said. "He's a world class setter, he can be very high-level outside hitter, he played opposite for us last year. The only position he hasn't played is middle, but he reads blocks well enough and is quick enough to do that if he wanted to. Those things don't happen if a player doesn't focus on the total package of skills."
Tune said that Ma'a, who he expects to play setter collegiately, is as competitive as they come.
"He competes in every aspect of the game, whereas some players only compete where they're comfortable, Micah competes in every single skill," Tune said. "He could probably play outside (hitter) at the next level, but he is just such a tactician and understands the game so well that he has the most control over the game at setter."
In a semifinal sweep of King Kekaulike Friday, Ma'a had 11 kills and in a quarterfinal win over Waiakea the previous weekend, he recorded eight kills, four digs, four blocks and two aces. He was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Tune said that Ma'a and fellow outside hitter Larry Tuileta, who will play at Southern California next year, have benefitted from each other over the years.
"I think they complement each other very well and they're very similar in a lot of ways," said Tune. "They both have outstanding ball control, they both have a deep understanding of the game, they both see the game unfolding on the court rather than reacting — they're one step ahead of everyone else — they're aware of adjustments and aware of whats going on, they both calm under pressure, they both step up in their moments and they're both leaders for us."
Ma'a, who is also a member of the Punahou football and boys' basketball teams, ranks among the top athletes Tune has coached at his alma mater.
"Very few athletes can approach Micah's level of athleticism that i've ever coached," said Tune. "The biggest comparison in terms of an athlete is Taylor Crabb. They're both lightning quick, deceptively strong and they both have the whole package. I really don't think there's a weakness in Micah's game."
Crabb, a 2010 Punahou graduate who went on to Long Beach State, won National Player of the Year honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2013 and was a First-Team All-American this season. Female Athlete of the Week: Alyssa Bettendorf, Seabury Hall track & fieldIn the final meet of her prep track and field career, Alyssa Bettendorf went out with a bang.
The senior swept the girls' 100-, 200- and 400-meter events to help Seabury Hall to its first Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championship at Kamehameha's Kunuiakea Stadium Saturday.
"She was awesome out there," Spartans' coach Bobby Grossman said of Bettendorf. "She's had just an incredible year. As the season went on, Alyssa just did what she had to do and she came up big for us at states."
Bettendorf won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.50, then follow with a thrilling victory in the 400, rallying to barely edge Pearl City's Diamond Briscoe by 1/100 of a second, before setting a new state-meet record of 24.68 seconds in the 200. She also placed third in the long jump.
"She's never beaten Diamond in the 400 — in fact, I don't think Diamond has lost in three years here — and she lost to her by at least 10 to 15 meters last year, but she told me that she believed that she could beat her and she did," Grossman said. "Honestly, I probably thought she had about a five percent chance of winning that race, so for me that was the race of the night. It was incredible."
The Spartans also got first-place finishes from Dakota Grossman — who is the daughter of the coach — in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter events and Amy Ozee in the high jump.
"Having lost two out of three years by a point or two, really drove us a lot," Bobby Grossman said. "It meant everything to us this year. The day after states last year we were ready to go, to start preparing for this year."
Grossman said he is especially pleased with Bettendorf, who didn't take track all that seriously just a few years ago.
"She just really got into sprinting two years ago," Grossman said of Bettendorf. ""She had run on the team before, but she wasn't that great. It wasn't until after her sophomore year that she decided to start lifting weights and train more. So for her personally and where she came from, there were really no expectations because most people have done a particular sport for most of their lives."
Bettendorf also plays on the Spartans' volleyball team in the fall, but gave up basketball two years ago. She also enjoys surfing in her free time, that is, until a earlier this spring.
"Right before the season start, she got some vana in her foot, so we had to put an end to that," Grossman laughed. "Volleyball used to be her love, but she probably loves track now — everybody does when you become a winner."
Bettendorf, who signed with the University of Northern Colorado before the start of the season, has served as inspiration for her fellow classmates Grossman said.
"Sometimes you might have a tiny bit of talent, but you create talent by working out and putting in the time and that's what Alyssa did," Grossman said. "I think she inspires a lot of people here that way — that they can be as fast as her, too."BASEBALLNawai Ah Yen, Baldwin — Batted 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs in a 6-4 win over Maui Wednesday
