MANOA – Elisa Favela put on a show for a second time in as many days at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium Wednesday.

"I've just been pitching the same way," said Favela. "I mixed my changeup here and there. We made sure we were changing speeds."

The sophomore threw a two-hit gem with six strikeouts to shutout top seeded and top ranked Kamehameha, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the Data House Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Softball State Championships.

A close to capacity crowd watched sixth-ranked Campbell (14-4) win their second game of the tournament and advance to play Leileihua in the semifinals Thursday at 5 p.m.

"Going into this game we prep the girls saying you guys got to bring your 'A' game, you have to execute offensively and defensively, you have to want it more them and it showed today how much they wanted it," said Campbell coach Shag Hermosura. "I'm glad they did, because they are well deserving of the work they put in at practice. Not taking nothing away from Kamehameha this could just have been one of their off days because they're a great ball club."

It was a matchup of two teams who finished second and third in the 2013 tournament, as well as two teams ranked in the top 10 of ScoringLive/OC16 Softball Power Rankings.

Warriors' starter, junior Kamalani Dung, struggled as she walked three Sabers in the first inning. With runners on first and second Favela delivered a one out RBI-double to the right field gap.  In the next at-bat centerfielder Nashlynn Anguay scored Carragh Morris from third on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 after one inning.

Through Favela's dominance she got timely defense. In the top of the fourth and as well in the seventh the Campbell outfield robbed Kamehameha's Christine Hipa for a home-run twice. Both left fielder, Ashlyn Yagin, and right fielder, Sierra Mariano needed all 200 feet of the ball park to record their out.

The Sabers padded their lead with three more runs in the fourth. A leadoff walk to Mariano and after a failed bunt a walk to Yagin put runners on first and second again with the top of the lineup coming up.

Another sophomore, Cydnee Curran, brought home Mariano on an RBI-single to the right side of the infield and a little confusion on the same play allowed Yagin to score as well. Then, with two outs and Curran on second, the sophomore connection happened again as Morris doubled down the third base line to score the fifth and final run for the Sabers.

"We were a little nervous before the game but once the game started our game face were on we were ready," said Morris who finished 1-3, with a double and an RBI. "We didn't want to let this one go by because we came here to win. We've been waiting for this our whole season."

The Warriors made a switch in the fifth inning, bringing in Hipa to pitch in relief of Dung. To Hipa's credit, she held down the Sabers for the final two innings and kept her team in it. Hipa finished with two strikeouts and no hits allowed.

Favela's only blemish in the game came when she allowed a two out walk to reserve Haley Kodama. A chance for Kamehameha (12-4) to rally seemed possible as sophomore Kaleihoku Kaneshiro, who had been robbed twice by the pitcher and center fielder earlier in the game, came to the plate. Kaneshiro hit a little flare into right-center field, but a diving catch by Anguay sealed the win and knocked out the Warriors from the tournament.

"I give my defense a lot of credit and props because they did a really well especially my outfielders," said Favela. "The last out of the game, I thought it was going to drop but then I saw her going for it and I knew she was going to get it."

"Leileihua's got a lot of speed and they have good bats." "They're the 'dark horse,' sleeper of the tournament and we got to be on our game."

The Sabers and Mules will face off for the third time this season. Campbell won both regular season matchups.
