Okura, Au garner weekly top performers honor

Male Athlete of the Week: Reece Okura, Roosevelt baseball
Reece Okura was long overdue for a hit by the time the bottom of the eighth came around Saturday afternoon.

The Roosevelt senior was in an 0-for-10 stretch at the plate before he lined a single to left field to lift the Rough Riders to a 1-0 walk-off win over Kailua Saturday.

"He has been struggling at the plate, so it was really good to see him get that base hit," Roosevelt coach Les Loo said.

Loo's team had been deadlocked with the Surfriders in a scoreless pitchers duel between Okura and Royce Komesu. Roosevelt had just four hits in the first seven innings.

"That inning we had three ground-ball base hits and one intentional walk to load the bases," Loo said. "Reece hit a really hard hard that takes one bounce past the shortstop and we win. That's the way it goes in baseball sometimes."

On the mound, Okura struck out eight and scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort. He gave up two walks.

"He kept the ball down, his defense helped him out a lot and he got eight strikeouts," Loo said. "That's how he normally pitches, but he was a little bit sharper with his command (Saturday)."

Okura, who is 2-1 on the season with a 1.80 ERA, was the losing pitcher when the Rough Riders lost a one-run game at Kalani nearly two weeks ago. The 5-foot-10 third-year varsity member plays first base when he's not pitching.

"If we played at an enclosed field it would have been different, but there was no fence so the ball kept rolling," Loo said of a three-run home run Okura allowed against the Falcons. "It might have been a double, but it was just hard luck that we played at an open field that day."

It was the third time in two seasons that Okura beat Kailua.

"He doesn't have their number, he just pitches well when he pitches against them," Loo said. "That's how we expect him to pitch every game, but he happens to do it all the time against Kailua since last year. They're an established program that does well almost every year, so to do well against them is really rewarding."

The win pulled Roosevelt in a three-way tie with Kailua and Moanalua for first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East. All three teams are 4-1.

"It helped, but it wasn't any more important than any other game," Loo said. "With everybody bunched up now, it's important to try and do well in every game."

The Rough Riders will be the designated visiting team when they play Na Menehune Wednesday at Stevenson Middle School field. Moanalua is unable to play games at its home field due to an on-going improvement project.

"We approach every game the same and we don't try to make one game bigger than the other, every one is an important game," Loo said. "The objective right now is to get a (No.) 1 or 2 seed in the East and get that (first-round) bye in the OIA Tournament."

First pitch Wednesday is set for 3:30 p.m.

Female Athlete of the Week: Chenoa Au, Leilehua softball
It was a great Spring break for Chenoa Au and the Leilehua softball team.

In three games in a five-day span Au, a senior shortstop, batted .667 (8 of 12) to help the Mules notch wins over Pearl City, Mililani and Waianae last week. Au had three extra base hits, drove in four runs and scored seven runs from her leadoff spot during the stretch.

I think all in all, she makes stuff happen either with her bat or on the field," Leilehua coach Stacy Araki said of Au, who started at second base as a freshman and sophomore before shifting over to shortstop as a junior. "However she's able to get on base, she's always looking for extra bags and just makes stuff happen. Not too many girls have the instinct to just go."

In an 11-9 win over Pearl City Tuesday, Au went 3 for 4 at the plate, doubled and scored twice. Two days later, she scored three more times in another 3-for-4 effort in a 4-3 win over previously-undefeated Mililani and Saturday, Au wrapped up the week by going 2 for 4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored in a 5-3 win over Waianae. The Mules three opponents — or victims, rather — were ranked 10th (Pearl City), second (Mililani) and fifth (Waianae) in the ScoringLive/OC16 Softball Power Rankings at the time of their meetings last week.

"The way the schedule was because of the rainout, that's why we had three games right after another," Araki said. "I knew that if we could beat (Pearl City Tuesday), it would put us in a better position. Then we had to come back against Mililani and then Waianae, so it was a tough week for the grils."

Leilehua rose to the challenge and in a matter of five days ascended into second place in the rugged Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West — half a game behind Mililani.

"I think it helped us where the kids just had to play — it was game one day, then practice, then game, then practice, then game again — we did not have time to slow down and prepare for this team," Araki said. "It was like ready, set, go. I think it took some pressure off the girls because they had no choice but to be ready to play."

Araki said her team was a slow-starter in not just games, but practices last week.

"The beginning of almost every game, we didn't start off good," Araki said. "We'd be kind of flat, then we come back, we could hold them, but momentum, hitting or something happened later in the game that went our way. Even our practice after the Mililani game was pretty bad."

The Mules wrap up the first round of the league season with a road game at winless Waipahu Saturday. They have a bye Thursday, which Araki is thankful for.

"Truthfully, I think it was a good time to rest," Araki said. "Mentally and physically the kids were getting drained."

The players got an extra day off Monday when heavy smoke from a nearby fire forced the cancellation of all practices after school activities.

Araki describes Au as smart — she has a cumulative GPA of 4.2 — and funny.

"She's hilarious. Your typical little girl who likes to play around, but the smart thing about her is she knows when to play around," Araki said. "Right after when we're not serious, she's going to say something or do something to make everybody laugh."
