KAPOLEI — With a pair of sweeps Tuesday night, Waianae kept its unbeaten record this season intact.

Waianae defeated Kapolei 25-20, 26-24 and followed that up with a 25-10, 25-20 win over Nanakuli in Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division action before a crowd of about 150 at the Kapolei Gymnasium.

"It was tough," Seariders' cocah Wilhelm Wagner said. "These guys are not pushover teams, they're good and they can play, so it felt good to get out of here with two wins. We had a lot of young guys, new faces on the court."

Waianae improved to 4-0 to move into sole possession of first place in the Red West. Leilehua and Mililani are also undefeated at 2-0, but were idle Tuesday.

Junior outside hitter Akoni Faumuina and sophomore hitter Keanu Pua-Autele paced the Waianae offensive attack in both matches, while junior libero Jonah Poe led the defensive charge.

"They definitely led us tonight," Wagner said. "They were consistent, but we can always do better."

The Seariders opened the night against the host Hurricanes and trailed 13-10 midway through the first set. They tied it at 13 after three consecutive Kapolei hitting errors only to fall behind 15-13. However, they answered with a 10-1 run that included eight Hurricanes' errors or violations to surge ahead 23-16. A few points later, Landon Young's kill down the line closed out the opening game, 25-20.

Kapolei took a 5-1 lead in game two and led by as many as many as five at several points in the set, including 22-17, but Waianae closed out the set and the match on a 9-2 run to win 26-24.

About 20 minutes later, the Seariders took the court against the Golden Hawks and abruptly blitzed them in the opening set, 25-10. They utilized runs of 6-0, 6-1 and scored the final seven points of the game to quickly take game one.

Waianae jumped out to an 8-3 lead in game two, but Nanakuli stormed back to tie it at 17 later in the set. Kainalu Kahalepauole got a solo block on the next point to reclaim the lead for the Seariders, who went on a 7-3 run to win game two, 25-20.

"We were getting a little too comfortable after the first set," Wagner said. "It was nice to see them come back from behind in the second set of both matches."

Waianae returns to the court Thursday when it takes on Mililani at 6 p.m. at Waialua.
