Moanalua's Fujimoto, Punahou's Sumida lead top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Tyler Fujimoto, Moanalua baseball
As season openers go, this one was about as good as it gets.

Tyler Fujimoto, a senior right-handed pitcher, tossed a complete-game two-hitter Wednesday to lead Moanalua to a 3-0 win over Kalani in the first regular season game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference.

Fujimoto kept the Falcons' hitters at bay, allowing just three bases runners — one came on an error — with six strikeouts and no walked. Just one Kalani player reached third base, but he was left stranded when Fujimoto struck out the next batter to end the inning. Three of his punchouts came against the Falcons' leadoff batter.

"He maximized his pitches really well," Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said. "I think he threw like 70-something pitches and a complete game. I'm happy for him."

Fujimoto was efficient, facing just two more batters than the minimum. He registered first-pitch strikes to all but five Falcons' hitters. He threw 76 pitches that day, 61 of them for strikes and got 10 groundouts and four flyouts.

"He does a good job of getting ahead of batters and throwing a lot of strikes," Yamada said of his ace. "He can throw several different pitches for strikes, but he really was throwing them over that day and his defense helped him out, too."

The game went scoreless for the first six innings before Na Menehune broke through with three runs in the top of the seventh. Adam Tanoue got things started with a leadoff double to left and Chance Kinoshita followed by getting on base by a fielder's choice. Drake Fukushima walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Nicholas Enrico was hit by a pitch to forced Kinoshita in before Kristian Yap doubled to left to bring Fukushima and Casey Isa in to score.

Fujimoto made sure the lead would hold by sending the Falcons down in order in the bottom of the frame. He needed just 11 pitches to record the last three outs, which including a pair of swinging strikeouts.

Yamada said Fujimoto, who is 6-feet tall and weights 175 pounds, has stepped up his game this season and has aspirations of hopefully playing college ball.

"He's serious about playing at the next level," Yamada said. He just wants a chance to play at the next level."

Female Athlete of the week: Sarah Sumida, Punahou softball
As the saying goes, big-time players come through in big-time games.

Sarah Sumida's performance Saturday in Punahou's 4-2 win over Kamehameha certainly fits the bill. The junior second baseman batted 2 for 3 with a home run and drove in three runs to lead the Buffanblu past the Warriors in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I tilt and a rematch of last year's state championship final.

"I think the best way I can sum it up is she was clutch," Punahou coach Bob Makahilahila said. "We played Kamehameha in the preseason and we knew that they were a tremendously talented team, so for us, that game was more about trying to find out where we stood, because in the preseason we used so many different players and we didn't have a consistent lineup."

Sumida's three-run shot came off an inside pitch from Kamehameha pitcher Kamalani Dung to break a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning.

"Before we went to Kamehameha Saturday, we hit on our batting cages and Sarah took a little extra time to work on hitting that inside pitch because in the past Kama has thrown inside pitches that have jammed her," Makahilahila said. "She took another 20 balls or so and when she got into the game and took that swing — as soon as she made contact, we knew that ball was gone."

This is Sumida's third consecutive year in the starting lineup, but Makahilahila said she has made considerable gains in her game since last season.

"I think her experience has helped her to develop into a very solid ball player, but I think this year she's really come full circle in terms of being able to see the ball and hit it," Makahilahila said. "Defensively, she's always played a solid second base for us and she's one of our team captains, so it was good to see her lead, not just as a captain in name, but with her ability on the field, as well."

Makahilahila said the Buffanblu will look to several veterans in the lineup, including Sumida, to lead the way this season after bringing home the school's first softball state title in 2013.

"Nicole Nishizawa, Pua Fujinaga, Amber Popovich — all of those girls have been veterans on the team and they're stepping up and becoming leaders for us now," Makahilahila said. "We lost a lot from last year — we lost our catcher, our pitcher, shortstop, center fielder, first baseman and right fielder — so these returnees are helping to fill that void and they've embraced that role and they all want to help make the team better."
