Kapalama Heights - The roar echoing from Kamehameha Schools Kapalama campus tonight at around 8 p.m. was the crowd at Kekuhaupio Gym reacting to a half court heave that beat the buzzer, sending the No. 7 Kamehameha Warriors and No. 3 Iolani Raiders into overtime tied at 43 points.

The Warriors rode that momentum, outscoring the Raiders 8-5 in overtime to come away with a 51-48 win.

Iolani had one final chance with 14 seconds left, but Kamehameha's senior forward Alaka'i Freitas stole the ball, raced down the court, and held on to the ball to seal the victory for the Warriors.

The Warriors scored just 3 points in the first quarter and were held to 9 points in the first half. Kamehameha more than tripled their production in the second half alone with 34 points, just enough to tie the ball game.

With 3.9 seconds to go Iolani's Ikaika Philip stepped to the line and hit both free throws to make the game 43-40.

And then it happened.

Kamehameha's junior guard Jaycob Smith received the inbound pass along the left side, took three dribbles up the court, and let a shot go between two Iolani defenders. All eyes watches as the ball gently went into to the basket to send the Warriors and their crowd into a frenzy.

"You can't write this stuff," Kamehameha head coach Greg Tacon said between the fourth quarter and OT.

"We're down three, there's three seconds left I was like I'm going, I threw it up, I made it," remarked Smith about hitting the buzzer beater.  The 5-foot-11 Smith finished with a game high 25 points.

Iolani had a 47-45 lead with 1:45 left in overtime before Kamehameha's senior guard Noa Kinimaka hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to put the Warriors up for good.

"It's definitely a big win it's a good revenge from our season opener I'm so happy for 'Jake' (Jaycob Smith) he played his heart out," commented Kinimaka who finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds.

"This win is a lot of things, one it gives a chance to say we can compete against these really, really good teams because Iolani is a terrific team, a really good team, and it helps our kids after such a slow start," said coach Tacon.

Iolani's Ikaika Philip led the Raiders with 15 points and 6 rebounds, but fouled out in OT with 1:35 left on an offensive player control foul.

With the win Kamehameha, got back into the ILH Division I chase with a 3-3 record, while Iolani dropped to 4-2.

The celebration, if any, will be short-lived, as No. 1 Punahou will pay a visit to Kekuhaupio Gym Friday at 6:30 p.m.
