MAKIKI – The Maryknoll Lady Spartans were able to bounce back with a much needed win against the Sacred Hearts Lancers tonight at the Maryknoll Community Center, 49-25.

On homecoming night in front of a close to capacity crowd the Lady Spartans played excellent defense and used their aggressiveness on the boards en route to a 49-25 victory, improving their record to 5-2 in the ILH an 15-2 overall.

The Lancers dropped to 1-7 in the ILH and 7-7 overall.

Sacred Hearts came into the game with the third leading scorer in the ILH Division I in Celina Pegan (10.9 PPG).  Unfortunately for the Lancers, Maryknoll was able to bottle her up to just 4 points and 3 rebounds.

The Lady Spartans held the Lancers to single digit points in each of the three first quarters. Maryknoll was able to take a 28-9 advantage into the half and a commanding 39-13 lead into the final frame.

"I told them from the beginning you don't want to be in a close game with this team like Sacred Hearts you want to get them early and build on that," said Maryknoll head coach ChicoFurtado.

Defensively, Maryknoll was able to get 13 team steals and had a 32-20 rebound advantage in the game over Sacred Hearts.

There was no quit in the Lancers, as they were able to outscore the Lady Spartans 12-10 in the last stanza, but the insurmountable lead proved to be too much.

The Lancers were led offensively by guard Keala Rutkowski who finished with 10 points and was 4-for-5 from the free throw line.

After suffering two straight losses to second-ranked Punahou and No. 7 Kamehameha on Tuesday, this was a much needed win for the Lady Spartans to stay in the mix of the Division I standings.

"We had a game against Punahou where we didn't finish and a game and we came out flat in the game right after," remarked Furtado.

Maryknoll was led offensively by their senior front court Maia Laboy and Siena Shupe.

"I'm just proud of our team that we could come back from two hard losses and we played our game that we usually do and as a senior I know that we will play the rest of the games hard and won't give up," commented Laboy after the game finishing with 10 points 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

"Shupe finally got off a little bit she hit a couple threes early and a jumper," remarked Furtado about his senior forward who posted 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.

The win did come at a cost as one of their top scorers and leaders senior guard Cianna Ochoco went down with an apparent ankle injury at the 5:15 mark of the 2nd quarter.

"Not too sure about Cianna yet, we just go one game at a time and to continue to fix some things like finishing around the bucket, it's a work in progress so we don't do the wrong things against good teams," said Coach Furtado, "My main concern is we're banged up right now, numbers wise we're down we're just trying to weather the storm right now."
