Pearl City boys, Kamehameha girls win preseason wrestling titles

WAHIAWA — A trio of individual champions led Pearl City to the boys' team crown at the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament at Leilehua's Paul T. Kobayashi Gym Saturday.

The Chargers earned 109 1/2 points with seven individuals placing in the top six of their respective weight classes. Alex Ursua, who won a state championship at Pac-Five last season, won Saturday at 126 pounds, two-time reigning state titlist Blake Cooper captured first at 160 pounds and Maui Lee claimed the 182-pound weight class to pace Pearl City.

Lahainaluna was the runner-up with 95 1/2 points, Campbell placed third with 85 points. Punahou finished fourth with 73 1/2 points and Mililani fifth with 65 points.

"It's good even though it's only preseason, but it gives them confidence," Chargers' coach Mike Lee said. "We have a lot of seniors who have been together for a while, so it's good for them to get something as a team."

Ursua defeated Campbell's Dillon Quitugua by majority decision, 16-6. He held leads of 6-3 after the first period and 10-4 after the second before cruising to victory in the third.

"It was a good win," Ursua said. "I had a tough bracket, but I just had to fight my way to first place. Overall team-wise, we worked as a team and we did pretty good."

Cooper built a 5-0 lead after the opening round of his 160-pound final against Castle's Troy Williams and went up 8-0 before a pin midway through the second period.

"I'm very happy for my team," Cooper said. "It's the first time that Pearl City's ever been doing this, so I've been pushing my teammates as hard as I can. It's good, I'm happy for all my teammates and our coaches that help us out."

Lee staged a come-from-behind victory over Waianae's William Domen in the 182-pound title bout. After a 2-0 first-period lead, Domen pulled ahead 3-2 in the second period off an escape and a takedown. However, Lee tied it at 3-all with an escape and retook the lead on a takedown to hold a 5-3 advantage heading into the final period, where he added two insurance points off a takedown. Lee finished off Domen with a pin with 1:07 left in the match.

"It feels amazing. It's the greatest feeling in the world knowing that my team is as good as all of us," said Lee, who mentioned he was motivated after watching Ursua and Cooper win ahead of him. "It gave me a big boost. It reminded me of when we were all in intermediate (school) together wrestling. It helped me win the match."

Pearl City trailed Lahainaluna by one point heading into the finals, but went a combined 6-1 while the Lunas went 3-5 in the round.

"We don't really talk about that kind of stuff, we just let it happen and if it happens, then great, but it's less pressure," Lee said. "We just want them to wrestle."

Two other individual returning state champions stood atop the podi in their respective weight classes. Pac-Five's Joshua Terao, who is seeking his fourth state title this season, pinned Mililani's Zackary Diamond 2:57 into their 132-pound final while Diamond's teammmate Braydon Akeo, a two-time state titlist himself, topped Punahou's Joshua Crimmins by majority decision, 16-7, in the 138-pound final.

"It's an awesome start to my senior year and I feel great," said Terao who isn't looking past any opponent. "I try to keep it off my mind — it's a lot of pressure on me — but I'd like to just focus on being a state champion this year and wrestling as hard as I can."

Akeo, like Terao, is a senior.

"It was real nice that I could come in here and wrestle my last Officials' tournament and pick up the win," said Akeo, who is hardly resting on his laurels either.

"Everybody's coming after me this year — I got a really deep weight class — it's just my motivation to train hard and I really want to get that third title," Akeo said.

Meanwhile, Kamehameha won the girls' team championship with 93 points. The Warriors were led by individual winners Harmony Pacheco (121 pounds) and Teshya Alo (130). Both were state championships last season.

"The win for this tournament is a good indicator of where we're at with our technique," Kamehameha coach Pablo Venenciano said. "We're still trying to see what our lineup is going to be with the descent plan. It's a busy season, so we're just trying to make sure that's fun."

Pacheco and Alo were all smiles just prior to receiving their tournament hardware.

"It's amazing — As an individual, it's really a relief to win by yourself, but to win as a team means that not only you are working hard, but your team is working hard and working together as a unit," said Pacheco, who pinned Pearl City's Asia Lien Evans 3:28 into the 121-pound title bout. "Us coming together has made a huge difference to our team. To have the chemistry and connect makes us be able to push better. Being able to win as a team is 10 times better than winning by yourself."

Alo certainly did her part, winning her 130-pound final over Leilehua's Lhyca Joy Butac with ease. The sophomore sensation pinned her opponent in a tournament-best eight seconds.

"It meant a lot to win because I've been training hard," Alo said. "As a team, I think this will bring us more together. Our team has been working really hard — we haven't been slacking — and I think we deserve that title. It's gonig to be motivation to keep working hard."

Pacheco and Alo, who were two of the Warriors' seven place-finishers, fed off each other's performances.

"We're practice partners and we always say that if we practice hard, we can make each other better and that's what happened," Alo said.

Kamehameha led Campbell by 10 points going into the finals and went 5-2 in that round, including three wins by pin fall.

Campbell finished second with 67 points, Aiea third with 66, Leilehua fourth with 56 and Pearl City fifth with 52.

Leilehua's Nakia James and Ashley Mercado — like Pacheco and Alo — celebrated individual championships together. James beat Kahuku's Aarica Barcina at 109 pounds in a rematch of last season's state final, while Mercado pinned Kamehameha's Shana Dilliner 5:22 into their 125-pound bout.

"It feels good, it's about time we got up there as a team," said James.

Mercado added: "This is the farthest we've come in three years that we've been wrestling."

A total of 420 wrestlers competed in the two-day tournament — which generates money for scholarships that team managers and statisticians can apply for — which saw 756 contested bouts.

Wrestlers will return to the mats next weekend. Moanalua and Iolani are co-hosting a team duel-meet tournament, while Punahou will host the Paani Challenge, an all-girls' tournament. Both tournaments get underway Friday and conclude Saturday.
