KAPOLEI — Two of the state's top boys soccer programs met in a preseason game on the West side Friday night.

Kamehameha got goals from three different players, including two in the first 11 minutes of the game, en route to a 3-1 win over Mililani in the Oahu Interleague Soccer Showcase, hosted by Kapolei. Weli Alamillo, TJ Fitzsimmons and Brett Wicklund each scored a goal to lead the Warriors in their preseason debut at the Hurricanes' home field.

The tournament, which is in its fourth year, features Kamehameha, Iolani and Punahou from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Mililani, Kapolei and Kalani from the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Each of the nine games features a private school against a public school.

"We're lucky that we're usually one of the top three teams and they bring the top three teams from the OIA and the ILH, which is great," Warriors' coach Jorge Barbosa said. "You don't get to see that — we go into our own leagues and that's it, so it's perfect — I wouldn't pass this up. Once they gave us this opportunity, I said 'Yeah, we're in.' We get to see the Mililani's, Kapolei's and this year Kalani. That's awesome, I think that they should do that more. It's a great opportunity to measure ourselves early."

Kamehameha controlled most of the possession against Mililani thanks to an opportunistic offense and a stifling defense. The Warriors benefitted from a pair of early goals by Alamillo and Fitzsimmons just a minute apart early in the first half.

The Trojans had some early scoring chances, but Micah Ishikawa's shot in the seventh minute sailed over the crossbar. Minutes later, an offside call negated another scoring threat.

In the 10th minute, Christopher Jenkins had a point-blank shot in front of the Mililani goal, but it was deflected by goalkeeper Robin Potts. Alamillo, one of two captains for the Warriors, gathered the rebound on the left side of the goalie box and put it away with his right foot to give Kamehameha a 1-0 lead.

"The ball came and I crossed it, it bounced off the post, I got the rebound and put it in," Alamillo said.

Just a minute after Alamillo's goal, Fitzsimmons received a long pass from a Joshua Rosenberg about 25 yards out, took a couple of dribbles and scored an easy goal after Potts and one of his fullbacks collided near the 18-yard box.

"My teammate, Josh, he played me a through ball and I had a guy on me and I started running off of it and then I took a touch, I saw the keeper, I took another touch this side and they collided and I just put it in softly," said Fitzsimmons, who is also the placekicker on the Kamehameha football team.

That score gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead, which held until the 53rd minute when Brett Wicklund scored on a rebound off a free kick. Mililani scored its only goal two minutes later when Micah Ishikawa put a left-footed shot in goal from about 17 yards out.

"As a whole, I think we did a lot of the things that we wanted to work on," Barbosa said. "For the first match with a full team, I think we did pretty well because this is a quality team — Mililani is always a good team so that's a good measure."

Barbosa said his team is further along in its progress than it usually is this time of year.

"This is the first time that we've come to this tournament in three years that we've had our team made up," he said. "In the past, we've used this as our last tournament before we made final cuts, so I think that helped us a little bit because we're a little more cohesive as a team, whereas before we were just playing people to see if they could stay on the team, so it was different. I think that helped a little bit because the boys know this is the team and we're not still in cut-mode. The boys brought some energy, we've been running a lot and I told them it's paying off and they agreed."

Kamehameha, which has 10 freshmen or sophomores on its roster, is looking to improve upon its 2012-2013 season, which ended without a state-tournament berth.

"We have high expectations this year, we shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times last year: lost to Pac-Five — shouldn't have, but we did — and we tied Saint Louis so we didn't go to states," Barbosa lamented. "If we won either of the two, we're in states, so that's how close it became, but close doesn't get you anywhere and they know that and so this year it's 'Let's take care of business.'"

Barbosa said the ILH should be highly-contested once again between the Warriors, Raiders and Buffablu.

"It's going to be interesting. I think Iolani has got the better team right now because of their keeper (Josh Adachi) — they've got an amazing keeper," Barbosa said. "Punahou lost some players, but so did we."

The showcase continues Saturday with six games starting at 9 a.m. Punahou plays Kalani at 5 p.m. in a rematch of last year's Division I state title game, which the Falcons won 3-2 in penalty kicks.
