User comments a privilege, not a right

We introduced user commenting about 3 years ago, and since then, I have considered on more than a few occasions to do what was finally done today.

The ability to post personal comment or opinion on our website has always been a privilege we've afforded our users, but until I can believe that the ability to post freely on ScoringLive stories will not be abused as it has been over the past few months, our commenting system will be suspended indefinitely.

The mission of ScoringLive has and will always be to help edify and support high school athletics. Our coverage may not always be viewed as balanced in the eyes of some, but we do the best we can do with the resources, money and staff available. We may not be able to provide exposure to every athlete, coach or team, but we go out of our way to not disparage or minify the achievement while reporting what goes on in games as factually as possible.

While I cannot speak to the validity or lack thereof of some of the more 'interesting' comments posted in recent weeks, I can say definitively that the overwhelming majority of them do not fall inline with the purpose and vision of ScoringLive.

The adage goes, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it," and in a perfect world, that would be the case. But this isn't that world, and I get that. I'm sure pundits can and will argue that people need to hear the 'truth' and I'm not disagreeing with that logic either.

What I will say is this. That venue for disseminating that so-called knowledge will not be on SL. Our website is a resource not only for fans, family, friends and our student athletes, but also is a tool to draw exposure and interest from colleges and universities nationwide to our best and brightest. I can tell you right now that some of the more 'juicy' comments do not help that process AT ALL.

So, if you're logging on each week to spread your sports IQ to the masses, or find considerable enjoyment refuting a fan of an opposing team, or just plain like to stir the proverbial "pot," then I'm not sure you'll find much to do on our site anymore.

But if you're looking for the best source for scores, stats, stories, images, and video highlights of Hawaii high school athletics, then you've come to the right place.

To our ScoringLive community-at-large, thank you for your support. I hope this can be seen as a step forward, rather than one backward.
