While top seeds Punahou and Mililani easily won their Division I state football semifinal games Friday night, a pair of underdogs — according to the tournament seeding anyway — beat the odds by winning on the road to reach Saturday's D2 final.
Under the afternoon sun at Eddie Hamada Track and Field at Kozuki Stadium — home to reigning six-time state champion and tournament No. 2-seed Iolani — Kauai dominated the line of scrimmage to rush for 333 yards and four touchdowns to come away with a stunning 28-7 upset of the Raiders. Senior running back Reggie McFadden carried 29 times for 135 yards to lead the Red Raiders, who averaged 5.6 yards per rush. Senior quarterback Kelson Andrade attempted just six passes and completed four of them for a modest 35 yards, but he added 79 rushing yards on 12 carries and senior running back Kyron Rapacon added 14 rushes for 79 yards.
The Kauai defense, which got four interceptions in a 13-7 first-round win over Pearl City a week ago, held the Raiders to just 160 yards of total offense, including minus-29 rushing yards. Senior cornerback Pono Bukoski intercepted a pass and recovered a pair of fumbles while junior defensive end Kalawaia Judd recorded a pair of sacks on Iolani quarterback Austin Jim On.
A few hours after the Red Raiders' monumental victory on Oahu, Kaiser and Lahainaluna took the field at War Memorial Stadium in another highly-anticipated game in Wailuku.
The Lunas, champions of the Maui Interscholastic League and the tournament's top seed, held a 9-7 lead at halftime, but 13 third-quarter points by the Cougars — on a pair of Fitou Fisiiahi touchdown runs — proved to be the difference. Kaiser got 274 of its 311 yards of total offense via its ground game. Senior running backs Thomas Buntenbah-Leong carried 19 times for 91 yards, Canaan Saole had 10 carries for 84 yards and Fisiiahi, an Oregon State-committ, added nine rushes for 76 yards. Buntenbah-Leong also scored on a 77-yard kickoff return in the first quarter to negate any momentum Lahainaluna picked up from a 49-yard touchdown run by Jared Rocha-Isalas one player earlier.
Saole also recorded a game-high 12 tackles and Fisiiahi had a pair of sacks and seven tackles, as did senior defensive back Makaio Hopeau-Lampitoc. The Cougars held the Lunas to just 209 yards of total offense — all but eight coming by rush.
That sets up an unlikely Kauai-Kaiser state championship game at Hawaiian Airlines Field in Halawa this weekend. Neither team has won it all (Kauai is 0-2 in title games; Kaiser has never reached the state final) and the Cougars will be making their first appearance in the championship game.
Many fans thought Kaiser, the Oahu Interscholastic Association champ, was seeded too low at No. 4, but Kauai coach Tommy Cox wasn't exactly thrilled about his team drawing a No. 3 seed. Well, two weeks into the state tournament and the Cougars and Red Raiders have backed up their coaches' words, but you can throw seedings out when it comes to the title game. If the first four games of the tournament have been any indication of what we can expect Saturday, it should be a good one.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. with the Division I final between Mililani and Punahou to follow.
