Prep sports fans on the Big Island have a lot to forward to this week both on the volleyball court and the football field.
Twelve of the top volleyball teams in the state converge at Keaau and Kamehameha-Hawaii for the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I State Championships. The tournament runs Tuesday through Friday.
Kamehameha Schools boasts three of the four seeded teams in the tournament. Interscholastic League of Honolulu-champion Kamehameha (15-1) is the top seed and will play the winner of a first-round match between Hilo and Kahuku. Oahu Interscholastic Association-titlist Mililani (14-0) drew the No. 2 seed and meets the winner between King Kekaulike and Aiea. Big Island Interscholastic Federation-champ Kamehameha-Hawaii is the third seed and will play the winner of a Punahou-Farrington first-round match. Maui Interscholastic Federation-titlist Kamehameha-Maui is the fourth seed and meets the winner between Moanalua and Leilehua.
The semifinals will be played at 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday and the championship at 7 p.m. Friday at Kamehameha-Hawaii.
A full tournament schedule is listed at the bottom of this blog.
Meanwhile, the BIIF will crown its football champions this weekend.
In a rematch of one of the most exciting games of the regular season, Hawaii Prep (8-2) meets Konawaena (8-2) with the league D2 title and a trip to the state tournament on the line Friday night. Ka Makani have one of the Big Island's premier running backs in Bobby Lum, while the Wildcats feature prolific passer Brandon Howes. Konawaena rallied to win, 22-21, at HPA on a field goal with 15 seconds left. That game was in Waimea. This time around, the teams will battle in Kealakekua at Julian Yates Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The following night top-seeded Hilo (9-1) and second-seeded Kealakehe (4-5) will faceoff for the D1 crown and a state-tournament berth. The teams will meet on the same field they played on just four weeks ago in a regular-season game, which the Vikings won, 6-3. The Waveriders have been the class of the BIIF for sometime now, but a changing of the guard could take place with a Hilo win Saturday night. Kickoff at Francis Wong Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
