Hawaii rally comes up short in 35-28 loss to Colorado State

HALAWA — Despite a valiant fourth-quarter comeback effort, Hawaii dropped its' seventh consecutive game with its 35-28 loss to Colorado State Saturday night at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (0-7 overall, 0-5 Mountain West) nearly erased an 18-point halftime deficit with 11 fourth-quarter points, but Taylor Graham's last-ditch Hail Mary pass fell incomplete in the end zone on the game's final play. The Rams (4-4, 2-1) won their second straight game, despite being outgained in total offense, 418 yards to 408.

Schroeder threw first-half touchdown passes of 38 yards to Chris Gant and 27 yards to Billy Ray Stutzmann and also scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter. He threw of 349 yards on 28-of-49 passing and was intercepted once. Gant finished with game-highs of eight receptions for 159 yards.

A 20-yard field goal by Tyler Hadden — his second made field goal of the game — with just two minutes and 54 seconds remaining, pulled Hawaii within 35-28. The Rainbow Warriors got the ball back at their own 35-yard line with 1:25 left and drove to the Rams' 45, but ran out of time.

Colorado State had 231 rushing yards, led by Kapri Bell's 137 yards on 33 carries. He scored on runs of 5, 11 and 13 yards. Quarterback Garrett Grayson completed 15 of his 26 passes for 177 yards and connected with tight end Crockett Gillmore on a 20-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Linebacker Max Morgan also found the end zone on a 73-yard fumble return in the first quarter.
