McKinley's Bradley, Kaiser's Schell garner top honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Gerime Bradley, McKinley football

The eighth week of prep football got off a quick start Thursday night thanks to Gerime Bradley.

The McKinley standout wide receiver/defensive back made an immediate impact on special teams with his 98-yard kickoff return on the first play of the Tigers' 35-14 win over Kailua in the first game of an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference doubleheader at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

"That gave us a boost right off the bat," McKinley coach Joe Cho said. "It always helps to get that early momentum in a ball game."

Late in the first quarter, Bradley picked off a pass in Surfriders' territory to set-up Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta's 7-yard touchdown pass to Kawelakeapono Kaeo-Mata to give the Tigers a 13-0 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.

"Anytime you can get points off a turnover that obviously helps," Cho said. "Gerime did a good job making a play and our offense was able to capitalize on it."

Bradley scored his first of two rushing touchdowns just before halftime on a 3-yard run that extended his team's lead to 28-7. He closed the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put it out of reach.

McKinley rushed for a season-high 209 yards (5.5 yards per rush) in the game, led by Tuitele-Iafeta's 138 yards on 11 carries. He also scored on a 57-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Bradley rushed 10 times for 34 yards.  For the season, he has rushed for 396 yards and six touchdowns.

The Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and are the Red East third seed and hosts Red West sixth-seed Waipahu Friday at Roosevelt. Kickoff at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium is set for 6 p.m.

Female Athlete of the Week: Lina Schell, Kaiser cross country

Even at less than her best, Lina Schell did enough to win Saturday.

The Kaiser senior overcame some tired legs to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division individual girls' championship at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park in a time of 20 minutes and 1.44 seconds Saturday.

"I think she was kind of tired coming into the race, but she was able to push through it because of her strength and determination," Cougars' coach Dennis Swart said. "She's been working pretty hard going into this race and it was difficult course, but she kept pushing and pushing."

Schell beat Kalaheo junior Percie Lyons by 13 seconds, but the Cougars lost the team title to the Mustangs.

"She had about 40 to 50 yards (of separation) most of the race, but the last 3/4-mile or so, she pushed it to about 150, 200 yards or so," Swart said.

Schell, a junior who transferred from Idaho along with her twin sister Erika during the offseason, was the top OIA finisher at the Iolani Invitational at Kualoa Ranch earlier this season.

"She did quite well in Idaho and she's been our top runner all year," Swart said. "She's done well this year, but we don't focus as much on the earlier races. We try to focus more on the championships, so we're waiting to see how that all works out for her."

Swart said Schell has remained hungry despite her successes this season.

"When you've been winning races, some runners can always let themselves get a little too high and she's never done that," Swart said. "She's worked really hard all Fall and i think she's improved. Now it's a matter of how much can she improve in three weeks. With each race, you want to get better and you get better from competition and she will have that the next three weeks."

Schell and the Cougars return to action at a race at Punahou this weekend before returning to CORP the following weekend for the OIA individual championships. The Honolulu Marathon/Hawaii High School State Championships take place on Oct. 25 at Island School on Kauai.
