Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Sabers, Trojans to tangle Saturday in Red West

With just a few weeks to go in the regular season of the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference, some teams are playing for playoff berths, while others — like Campbell and Mililani — are jockeying for seeding in the postseason.

The Sabers, led by their do-it-all quarterback Isaac Hurd, bring a No. 6 ranking in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, to central Oahu for a showdown against the fourth-ranked Trojans at John Kauinana Stadium in this week's UHA Game of the Week.

Campbell, whose lone loss came at Leilehua nearly four weeks ago, sits in third place in the seven-team Red West — half a game behind second-place Kapolei and half a game in front of fourth-place Waianae. The Sabers have been solid on both sides of the ball, averaging over 30 points and 357 yards offensively, while allowing just over 15 points and 202 yards defensively per game. Hurd, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior, has thrown for 1,042 yards this season — good for third-most in Division I — with 11 touchdowns against five interceptions. He also ranks second on the team with 280 rushing yards and a team-high six rushing scores.

First-place Mililani has played four of its first five games on the road, including three straight road wins over Kapolei, Waianae and Waipahu, respectively. Defense has led the way for the Trojans, who allow less than 14 points and 223 yards per game by the opposition. A pair of sophomore lead the offense, which is averaging just under 35 points and 372 yards per game. Running back Vavae Melepeai has rushed for 485 yards and nine touchdowns while quarterback McKenzie Milton has thrown for 659 yards with seven touchdowns against one interception.

Kickoff between the Sabers and Trojans is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live statewide on OC16.
