Mules host Seariders Friday in key OIA Red West game




The sixth- and seventh-ranked teams in this week's ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings will face off in a pivotal Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference game Friday night at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

Leilehua, one of just four remaining unbeaten teams statewide, hosts Waianae, which is coming off its first loss of the 2013 season last week, in the UHA Game of the Week. The game will be live streamed online at ScoringLive.com and simulcast on NBC Sports Radio/AM1500.

In other Red West games Friday, No. 10 Aiea visits No. 9 Kapolei and fourth-ranked Mililani visits Waipahu. Meanwhile, over in the Red East this weekend, first-place McKinley visits Castle Friday and Kailua meets Farrington while No. 5 Kahuku hosts Moanalua Saturday.

RED WEST CONFERENCE

No. 7 Waianae at No. 6 Leilehua, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Hugh Yoshida Stadium

The Seariders (3-1 overall, 1-1 OIA Red West) suffered their first loss of the season Friday, 44-24, to a visiting Mililani team. Running back Mahvan Tau rushed for a game-high 138 yards and two touchdowns. Waianae, which played without leading rusher Jemery Willes, held a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter, but allowed 30 second-half points to the Trojans. The Mules (3-0 overall, 1-0 OIA Red West) are the lone undefeated team remaining in the OIA, beat up on visiting Vincent Massey of Canada, 65-6, in a non-league game Friday. Quarterback Mack Eberhardt (11 of 23 for 178 passing yards) and Justin Jenks (7 of 11 for 156) threw two touchdown passes each and Ikaika Piceno scored on a 79-yard run and an 80-yard pass reception in the win.  

No. 4 Mililani at Waipahu, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex
The Trojans (3-1 overall, 2-0 OIA Red West) came away with a 44-24 win at Waianae Friday to claim first place in the Red West. Running back Vavae Malepeai carried 23 times for 115 yards with two touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Milton threw for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both to Dayton Furuta, in the win. The Marauders (1-2 overall, 0-1 OIA Red West) allowed 423 offensive yards and a pair of fourth-quarter scores in a 22-18 loss to Waipahu Friday. Quarterback Kai Mercado-Aiona rushed for a pair of touchdowns, but was also intercepted twice in a losing effort.

No. 10 Aiea at No. 9 Kapolei, Friday, 7 p.m.

Na Alii (2-2 overall, 0-2 OIA Red West) are coming off a 28-7 loss to Campbell Friday, their fourth straight home game to open the season. Elijah Tausaga, a defensive back, became the third different player to start at quarterback this season for Aiea against the Sabers. Terrence Lauti scored the lone touchdown, a 2-yard run in the first quarter, in the loss. The Hurricanes (3-1 overall, 1-1 OIA Red West) rebounded from a 35-0 loss to Mililani two weeks ago with a 22-18 win over Waipahu Friday. Quarterback Aizon Kahana threw for 221 yards with two touchdowns and defensive back Bryson Hughes intercepted a pair of passes defensively against the Marauders.

RED EAST CONFERENCE

McKinley at Castle, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Tigers (3-1 overall, 2-0 OIA Red East) are atop the Red East standings following a 35-0 shutout of Kaimuki Saturday. Running backs Gerime Bradley and Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta each rushed for two touchdowns and the defense held the Bulldogs to just 101 yards offensively, including just one rushing yard. The Knights (1-3 overall, 0-2 OIA Red East) suffered a heart-breaking 20-13 overtime loss to Farrington Saturday — their second overtime loss in as many weeks. Kailua beat Castle, 23-20, on a field goal in extra time two weeks ago. Quarterback Stephen Lee threw a pair of touchdown passes in the loss to the Governors.  

Kailua vs. Farrington, Saturday, 5:30 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium
The Surfriders (1-3 overall, 1-1 OIA Red East) allowed 396 yards of total offense — including 285 passing — in a 52-0 loss at Moanalua Friday. Quarterback Noah Auld was intercepted twice and the rushing game could only muster 19 yards on 23 attempts (0.8 yards per rush). The Governors (1-2 overall, 1-0 OIA Red East) needed overtime to slide by Castle, 20-14, on Sanele Lavatai's game-winning 10-yard touchdown run. Linebacker Titus Lave's 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown sent the game into overtime. Farrington, which played without starting quarterback Montana Liana against the Knights, are averaging just 117.7 (38.7 rush/79.0 pass) yards offensively per game.

Moanalua at No. 5 Kahuku, Saturday, 6 p.m. at Carleton Weimer Field

Na Menehune (1-3 overall, 1-1 OIA Red East) picked up win No. 1 of 2013 with a 52-0 drubbing of Kailua Friday. Quarterback Micah Kaneshiro passed for 285 yards and six touchdowns to lead the way. Wide receivers Chad Aragon (nine catches for 97 yards) and Stevie Feliciano (five catches for 85 yards) caught two touchdown passes apiece and the defense allowed just 74 yards by the Surfriders. The Red Raiders (1-2 overall, 1-0 OIA Red East) return from the mainland, following a 38-15 loss at Utah 4A-power East Saturday. Kahuku is allowing an average of 32.3 points and 344.5 yards per game by opponents.
 
WHITE CONFERENCE

Roosevelt vs. Anuenue, Friday, 6 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium
The Rough Riders (0-4 overall, 0-3 OIA White) are coming off a 28-21 loss to Nanakuli Friday — their closest margin of defeat this season. Quarterback Keanu Furtado tossed a pair of touchdowns — both to Dre Crim, who finished with game-highs of nine catches for 130 yards. Na Koa (0-3 overall, 0-2 OIA White) had a bye last week after a 34-0 loss to Kalaheo on Aug. 24. Anuenue, which has yet to score a point in 2013, has been outscored by its three opponents this season, 143 to 0.

Radford vs. Kalani, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium
The Rams (3-1 overall, 2-1 OIA White) were picked apart in a 48-7 home loss to Kaiser Friday. Quarterback Cody Lui-Yuen was intercepted three times as Radford was held to just 197 yards offensively by the Cougars. The Rams are still averaging 41 points and 395 yards per game on offense, while allowing an average of 19.3 points and 270.5 yards on defense. The Falcons (2-2 overall, 2-1 OIA White) even their record with a 34-17 win over Kalaheo Saturday. Quarterback Noah Brum passed for 333 yards and two touchdowns and Noah Kim added a pair of rushing scores against the Mustangs.  

Kaiser at Waialua, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Toshiyuki Nakasone Field
The Cougars (2-1 overall, 2-0 OIA White) came away with a huge 48-7 win at Radford Friday. Kaiser amassed 497 yards of total offense, including 274 passing yards and three touchdown from quarterback Lii Karratti. Thomas Leong scored on a a rush and a pass reception and Fitou Fisiiahi added 103 rushing yards with two touchdowns in the win. The Bulldogs (1-3 overall, 1-2 OIA White) suffered a 38-12 defeat at Pearl City Friday. Xavier Repollo caught a touchdown pass and scored on a 90-yard kickoff return against the Chargers.  

Pearl City vs. Kalaheo, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Kailua
The Chargers (1-2 overall, 1-1 OIA White) beat Waialua, 38-12, at home Friday to get their first win of 2013. Quarterback Jordan Taamu passed for 201 yards and three touchdowns as Pearl City racked up 354 yards of total offense against the Bulldogs. The Mustangs (2-2 overall, 2-1 OIA White) fell behind 13-0 after the first quarter in a 34-17 loss to Kalani Saturday. Running back Makena Johnston ran for 121 yards and touchdown on just six carries and wide receiver Shayde Spencer caught five passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.
 
INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU

No. 3 Saint Louis vs. Pac-Five, Friday, 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Crusaders (2-1 overall, 0-1 ILH) suffered a 38-17 loss to Kamehameha Friday in their ILH opener. Quarterback Ryder Kuhns threw for 260 yards with two touchdowns, but was intercepted three times in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Drew Kobayashi caught three passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. The Wolf Pack (0-3 overall, 0-1 ILH) held a 14-7 first-quarter lead, but allowed 24 straight points by Damien in a 31-14 loss. Quarterback Anthony Canencia threw two touchdown passes to Tsubasa Brennan against the Monarchs.

No. 2 Kamehameha vs. Iolani, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Warriors (4-0 overall, 1-0 ILH) took over in the fourth quarter of a 38-17 win over previously-unbeaten Saint Louis Friday, outscoring the Crusaders 28-0 in the final frame. Running back Brandon Kahookele rushed for two touchdowns and caught a scoring pass while Gavin Panui and Josiah Lucas each returned an interception for a touchdown. The Raiders (3-1 overall, 1-0 ILH) are coming off their second consecutive shutout with Friday’s 35-0 win over Saint Francis. Running back Jordan Ross ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Damien at No. 1 Punahou, Saturday, 2 p.m. at Alexander Field
The Monarchs (2-1 overall, 1-0 ILH) posted 383 yards of total offense (191 rushing/192 passing) in a 31-14 win over Pac-Five Friday. Quarterback Syles Choy threw a pair of touchdown passes in a 17-point second quarter against the Wolf Pack. It was Damien’s first ILH win since the 2009 season, when it beat now-defunct Word of Life. The Buffanblu (2-0 overall, 0-0 ILH) return home to the Islands after a 10-6 win over Helix (Calif.) Saturday. Kanawai Noa caught seven passes for 159 yards — both game-highs — with a touchdown and Wayne Talaupapa carried 25 times for 134 yards.
 
BIG ISLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Kamehameha-Hawaii vs. Waiakea, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium
Kamehameha-Hawaii (1-2 overall, 0-0 BIIF) has been outscored 73-3 in its last two games – both losses – including a 37-3 home loss to Konawaena Friday. Running back Ina Teofilo carried 31 times for 180 yards in a losing effort. Waiakea (2-2 overall, 0-0 BIIF) has won two straight since an 0-2 start. Running back Devin Preston rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns in a 15-0 win at Honokaa Friday.

Honokaa at Konawaena, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Julian Yates Field
The Dragons (0-2 overall, 0-0 BIIF) were shutout in a 15-0 loss to Waiakea Friday. Honokaa is averaging just over a touchdown per game, while allowing 27 points and 310 yards per game. The Wildcats (2-1 overall, 0-0 BIIF) have scored at least 37 points in all three of their games this season. Quarterback Brandon Howes threw for 235 yards with two touchdowns. He also rushed for a team-high 103 yards and another score in the win.

Hawaii Prep at Kealakehe, Saturday, 7 p.m.
Ka Makani (2-1 overall, 0-0 BIIF) suffered their first loss in an 18-10 decision against Hilo Saturday. Nicky Palleschi scored HPA’s lone touchdown against the Vikings on his 50-yard interception return. The Waveriders (1-1 overall, 0-0 BIIF) picked up their first win of the season with a 21-12 win at Keaau Friday. Keanu Tilfas scored on a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Cougars.

Keaau vs. Hilo, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium
The Cougars (0-1 overall, 0-0 BIIF) suffered a 21-12 home loss to Kealakehe in their season debut Friday. Quarterback George Lucas-Tadeo threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort. The Vikings (2-1 overall, 0-0 BIIF) rallied with 10 fourth-quarter points in an 18-10 win at Hawaii Prep Saturday. Hilo plays four of its final six games this season at Francis Wong Stadium.
 
MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE

King Kekaulike vs. Lahainaluna, Friday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium
Na Alii (0-2 overall, 0-2 MIL) suffered a 32-7 home loss to Maui Saturday. The Sabers built a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. Quarterback Ryley Widell threw for 116 yards and a touchdown and added 110 rushing yards and another score on the ground for King Kekaulike. The Lunas (3-0 overall, 1-0 MIL) posted 489 yards of total offense, including 361 rushing, in a 41-7 win over Kamehameha-Maui Saturday. Christian Whitehead rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Kamehameha-Maui vs. Baldwin, Saturday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium
The Warriors (1-2 overall, 1-1 MIL) generated just 112 yards of offense in a 42-7 loss to Lahainaluna Saturday. Chase Newton’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Chase Alexander tied it at 7 in the first quarter, but the Lunas scored 35 unanswered points to close out the game. The Bears (1-2 overall, 1-0 MIL) dropped a 49-20 non-league game against Southern California-power Mission Viejo Friday. Quarterback Josiah Maglente-Tonu hit Kawelakeapono Kaeo-Mata twice on touchdown passes in the losing effort.
 
KAUAI INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Kapaa vs. Kauai, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium
The Warriors (2-1 overall, 1-0 KIF) are coming off a 23-0 shutout of Waimea Friday. Quarterback Fresno Masaniai threw two touchdown passes in the win for Kapaa, which is ranked seventh in the SL/OC16 D2 Power Rankings. The Red Raiders (2-0 overall, 0-0 KIF), the No. 5 team in this week’s Power Rankings, beat visiting Cottage Grove (Ore.), 41-21, in a non-league game Saturday. Quarterback Kelson Andrade threw a pair of touchdown passes and Kyron Rapacon added two rushing scores.
