Male Athlete of the Week: Isaac Hurd, Campbell football

Isaac Hurd was a one-man show Friday night. The Campbell senior quarterback factored into all four of his team's touchdowns to rally the Sabers to a 28-7 win at Aiea in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference game.

Hurd ran in a pair of 1-yard touchdowns in the second quarter and for good measure, threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Galuenga Castro. It was a much-needed victory for Campbell, which lost at Leilehua the week before in a wild, back-and-forth game.

"I think for us, we look at every game - especially in our division - as a big game," Sabers' coach Amosa Amosa said. "Against Leilehua, we knew that we lost an opportunity and all of last week, in practices leading up to the Aiea game, we tried to teach our kids realize how we could have won that game and we wanted to make sure that we gave ourselves every chance to win against Aiea."

Hurd, who had his highs (251 passing yards, 2 pass TDs, 1 rush TD) and lows (18-of-57 passing, 3 INTs) in the Leilehua loss, took his coach's words to heart during the week and took matters into his own hands against Aiea Friday. He completed 12 of his 26 passes for 195 yards with one interception, but also rushed for a game-high 97 yards on 12 carries. Despite taking a hard hit early in the second half, Hurd put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with his 19- and 2-yard touchdown passes to Castro.

"Ike is one of the top athletes on the team and he can use his feet to get us some yardage or a first down, but like I always tell him, he's got to last the season," Amosa said. "There are a ton of things we can do with Ike being healthy, but sometimes I don't even realize, until after the game and I look at the stats, that he ran that much. So I don't call too many run plays for him because, I know that if things break down, he can use his feet and take off running."

After splitting the quarterbacking duties the past two years, Hurd has total control of the Sabers' offense this season. He has thrown for 751 yards (3rd in D1) with nine touchdowns against four interceptions. Hurd also leads the team rushing with 291 yards and four touchdowns.

"Coming into this year, I told him 'this is your team, it's your third year, you're the senior, you're the captain of team. Do what you think needs to be done to get our team going.'" Amosa said. "He's aware and understands what we're doing and so far he's done everything that we've asked for him. We're going to take advantage of the talent that he has and we're looking for a breakout year from him."

Campbell, who remained at the No. 8 spot in this week's ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, has a bye this week before hosting seventh-ranked Waianae on Sept. 13.

Female Athlete of the Week: Percie Lyons, Kalaheo cross country

One would be mistaken to take Percie Lyons lightly. The 5-foot-2 Kalaheo junior, as her coach describes, "is not a big girl, but she gives a big effort."

Lyons has already made a big impact, winning a preseason race Saturday at Radford in a time of 20 minutes and 48.53 seconds.

"The course was pretty confusing - there were a lot of turns - but I'm pretty happy with my time," said Lyons, who also finished 12th in the 1,500-meter run at the state track & field championships in May. "I was aiming for a little bit faster time, but I'm happy for it being the first race."

It was her first official race in Hawaii (she also won a scrimmage two weeks ago) after transferring from Great Oaks (Temecula, Calif.) in December of last year. Great Oaks was the No. 3-ranked cross country team in the nation last year, according to Kalaheo coach Peter Jay.

"She comes from a good program, so of course, when I found out that she was coming, I was excited," said Jay, who is in his second season of coaching the Mustangs. "We had a pretty year last year with a bunch of freshmen, but I was already thinking that with her times from running on the mainland that she would be our top girl and she's not disappointing our expectations."

Lyons admitted her first love was soccer, but after joining the Great Oaks team as a freshman, she found a new passion.

"I played club soccer in California and I joined cross country to stay in shape for that, but now I like running more," said Lyons, one of two captains for Kalaheo this season. "I was pretty shy before the season, I didn't like leading very much, but I like it love. I just love running and working out, so I guess its easier to lead things that I'm passionate about."

Jay said that Lyons isn't the most vocal person, opting instead to lead by example - a formula that has worked so far.

"She lets her actions and effort speak for herself," Jay said. "She puts in nothing but her best effort whether it's in a race or at practice and she gets a lot of respect from just being a team person and encouraging her teammates. She's very coachable, always smiling and a total team player. Percie's kind of our model student-athlete to me."

Lyons has set her sights set upon a top-3 finish at the state tournament, which will be held at Island School on Kauai next month.

"I have a good feeling she's going to reach that," Jay said. "She just has a determination about her. She puts in a lot of extra training, too. She does have that athletic ability, but she's one that's going to give you maximum effort."

Lyons and the Mustangs return to action Saturday at the Kaiser Invitational.
