Notebook: Thursday night star, Neighbor results and OIA White action

The second weekend of prep football played out over three days, with a special Thursday night feature between reigning Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Punahou and reigning Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference champion Mililani in a rematch of a Division I state semifinal from a year ago.

With a statewide audience on live television, all eyes were on a non-league battle between visiting Punahou and host Mililani Thursday night at John Kauinana Stadium. Despite his team coming up on the losing end of the matchup, Trojans’ defensive end Kelii Padello put on a performance to remember. The senior defensive end battled Semisi Uluave, Punahou’s star left tackle, for most of the night and recorded four of Mililani’s six sacks for the game. Padello, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound speed rusher, got to Buffanblu quarterback Larry Tuileta twice in each half, while defensive tackle Rex Manu and Padello’s younger brother, Kaimana – the defensive end opposite of Kelii – also recorded a sack for the Trojans.

-Updates from the Neighbors

Some of the most interesting results of the weekend came from the neighbor islands.

In a premiere Division II contest in Wailuku Saturday, Lahainaluna defeated Kapaa, 28-13, at War Memorial Stadium. The Lunas (1-0) got a pair of defensive scores in the first half off of Hercules Mataafa’s 35-yard fumble return and Kiko Kohler-Fonohema’s 81-yard interception return to help build a 21-7 halftime lead. The Warriors (1-1) made it a one-score game following Leevi Bethel’s 43-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but Makoa Filikitonga dashed their hopes with his third-quarter, 68-yard touchdown run to extend Lahainaluna’s lead to 28-13.

In the game that followed the Lunas and Warriors at War Memorial Stadium Saturday night, Maui High staged a furious second-half rally to beat visiting Konawaena, 47-37. The Sabers trailed 24-7 at halftime, but scored 20 points off three touchdowns in the first four minutes and 12 seconds of the second half to pull ahead. Maui took the lead for good with 7:48 to play on a Justin Carvalho 18-yard touchdown run.

Other non-league neighbor-island results:

Hilo 36, Waiakea 6

Hawaii Prep 13, Waimea 8

Kauai 32, Kwansei (Japan) 10

-Regular-season games underway in OIA White

The OIA White Conference began its nine-week regular season over the weekend with four games. The home teams went 3-1 in those games. Roosevelt (0-2 overall) was the lone host to lose, falling to Kalaheo (1-1), 15-0, Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Meanwhile Radford (2-0) rolled to a 67-0 shutout of Anuenue (0-2) at John Velasco Stadium and Kaiser (1-1) clobbered rival Kalani (0-2), 62-20, Saturday night. The only game that ended within a touchdown was Nanakuli’s 22-19 home win over Waialua. The Golden Hawks (1-1) led, 22-6, after Chazz Troutman’s second touchdown run – early in the fourth quarter – before the Bulldogs (0-2) scored 12 unanswered points on rushing touchdowns by Kebi Dellatan and Taleon Lele.

-Kaiser’s tireless triumvirate

Don’t fault the trio of Thomas Leong, Fitou Fisiiahi and Melvin Kahunanui if they choose to sleep in Sunday morning. All three players were pivotal in numerous facets of Kaiser’s 64-20 home win over rival Kalani Saturday. Leong, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior, scored twice on special teams (75-yd. punt return and 94-yd. kickoff return) and once on offense (11-yd. run). Fisiiahi, a 6-foot, 220-pound senior, played linebacker on defense and running back offensively, scoring on runs of 4, 7 and 40 yards and Kahunanui, a 5-foot-11, 184-pound senior, intercepted two passes (including a 30-yd. pick-six) and caught a 16-yard TD pass.

-Kahookele to the rescue

Kamehameha starting running back Kaulana Apelu suffered a knee injury in the Warriors’ 15-0 win over Castle a little over a week ago. The dynamic junior is most of the best backs in the ILH – if not the state – so there was reason for concern for Kamehameha fans. However, in his absence, backup Brandon Kahookele has stepped up to the plate, so to speak. The senior carried 22 times for 200 yards in his team’s 38-3 rout of Farrington Friday. Kahookele leads all players in the state with 338 yards rushing yards on 40 attempts. Apelu may or may not return, depending on the results of a MRI. It is feared he may have suffered an ACL tear, which would almost certainly end his season.

-Academic probation over after first two weeks

For the first two weeks of the 2013 season, many teams were without a number of players – some more than others – due to academic ineligibility. Because most public schools started a week earlier than in recent years, student-athletes who were ineligible at the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year were forced to sit out the first two weeks of the prep football season. However, schools have been in session now for two weeks – the minimum instruction time required before an official grade check can be done. Meaning that teams – some more than others – will be bolstered by their “new additions.”

-OIA Red West continues to dominate non-league

Mililani’s loss to Punahou was the first – and so far, only – defeat suffered by a team from the OIA Red West this season. The conference has continued to dominate in non-league games, accumulating an 11-1 record so far. Meanwhile, the Red East continues to struggle, winning just two games over the weekend to improve to 3-10 through two weeks. It has yet to beat a Division-I opponent this season. Here are updated non-league records by division/league with points for and points allowed in parenthesis. The OIA White is the lone division to have started conference play.

BIIF – 4 wins-3 losses (152 points for-154 points against)

ILH D1 – 5 wins-0 losses (177 points for-41 points against)

ILH D2 – 2 wins-5 losses (151 points for-271 points against)

KIF – 3 wins-2 losses (151 points for-63 points against)

MIL – 3 wins-2 losses (147 points for-134 points against)

OIA Red East – 3 wins-10 losses (159 points for-342 points against)

OIA Red West – 11 wins-1 loss (389 points for-152 points against)
