Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Kahuku-Saint Louis highlights weekend games

A early-season clash between perennial prep football powers Kahuku and Saint Louis Saturday headlines this weekend’s slate of games.

The UHA Game of the Week features the reigning two-time Division I state champion Red Raiders taking on the Crusaders at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium. Live audio of the game, which kicks off at 7 p.m., will be available on ScoringLive.com and simulcast on NBC Sports Radio/AM1500. Calling the game will be Felipe Ojastro (play-by-play) and Mark Veneri (color commentary).

NON-LEAGUE

Kahuku vs. Saint Louis, 7 p.m. at Aloha Stadium (AM 1500/ScoringLive.com)

The Red Raiders (0-0) are making their 2013 debut and will have many new faces in key positions. Tuli Wily-Matagi steps in to replace Lasi Livai at QB while a trio of backs will try to fill the void left behind when Aofaga Wily graduated. PJ Liua, Soli Afalava and Salanoa Wily will split the RB duties this season. DE/TE Lamone Williams is a relentless pass rusher on defense while displaying good hands on offense. The Crusaders (1-0) return to the field following a 55-0 shutout of Baldwin in Wailuku Saturday. Offensive stars QB Ryder Kuhns (9-of-10 passing, 207 yds, 3 TDs), RB Adam Noga (10 rush, 86 yds, TD) and Devan Stubblefield (5 rec, 133 yds, 3 TDs) played just one half before giving way to reserves. Defensively, Saint Louis held the Bears to 146 yards of total offense. The Crusaders led 41-0 by halftime. It will be the 14th meeting between the programs, with Kahuku leading the all-time series, 7 to 6. The Red Raiders have won the last six times, most recently a 49-27 win at Carleton E. Weimer Field in 2010.

Punahou at Mililani, Thursday, 7 p.m. at John Kauinana Stadium (OC16)

The Buffanblu (0-0) return to the field for the first time since the Division I state title game last season. Punahou has reached the championship game in both 2011 and 2012, only to lose to Kahuku both times. QB Larry Tuileta, TE Dakota Torres, WR Kanawai Noa and RB KJ Sekoni lead a star-studded offense. A veteran secondary and defensive line are strengths on the other side of the ball. The availability of DE Canton Kaumatule (elbow) is questionable. The Trojans (1-0) roughed up Moanalua, 39-9, on the road last week, putting up 444 yards of total offense (227 rush/217 pass), while its defense allowed just 97 by the hosts. QB’s McKenzie Milton (14-of-20 passing, 108 yds, 2 TDs, INT) and Robert Faleafine (12-of-20 passing, INT) are still battling to replace Jarin Morikawa. RB Vavae Malepeai had two 21-yard touchdown runs against Moanalua.

Pac-Five at Aiea, Friday, 6 p.m.

The Wolf Pack (0-1) were leading reigning OIA White champion Radford, 8-6, at halftime last week, only to allow 41 second-half points in a 47-15 loss to the Rams. QB Anthony Canencia threw 65 passes, completing 29 of them for 293 yards with two TDs and an INT. Pac-Five allowed 581 yards of offense by Radford, including five TD passes. Na Alii (1-0) are home for a second consecutive week after having beat Kailua, 35-0, last week. QB Jordan Lii threw for 272 yards with three TDs and three INTs. SE Shaenen Hernandez-Fonoti caught four passes for 127 yards, including two first-half TDs. Aiea also got scores from its defense and special teams against the Surfriders. DB Elijah Tausaga scored on a 54-yard fumble return and Jae Won Huh converted second-half field goals from 24 and 45 yards.

Damien at Castle, Friday, 6:30 p.m.

The Monarchs (1-0) opened on the Valley Isle last week with a 29-21win at Kamehameha-Maui. QB Syles Choy was 19-of-32 passing for 255 yards with three TDs and an INT, K Nicolas Angoco made three FGs and the defense got three interceptions against the Warriors. The Knights (0-1) lost to Kamehameha, 15-0, last week in their first home game in two years while an artificial surface was being installed in the football stadium. Castle was woeful on offense, finishing with minus-33 yards and turning it over on three interceptions, including one pick-six. Both coaches (Damien’s Eddie Klaneski and Castle’s Nelson Maeda) are former defensive backs at the University of Hawaii.

Farrington at Kamehameha, Friday, 7 p.m. at Kunuiakea Stadium (OC16)

The Govs (0-1) battled Friday-afternoon, westbound traffic a week ago only to come up on the wrong end of a 33-16 game at Waianae. QB Montana Liana was just 11-of-23 passing for 82 yards and threw a momentum-turning pick-six in the fourth quarter while the running game generated just 41 yards and one TD. Meanwhile, the Warriors opened the Doug Cosbie era with a 15-0 win at Castle that left the first-year coach hardly impressed with his offense. They ran the ball on all but four plays from scrimmage, with the bulk of the production coming from back-up RB Brandon Kahookele (18 carries, 138 yards, TD), who stepped in when starter Kaulana Apelu left with a knee injury in the first half. LB Calen Holt scored on a 20-yard interception return against the Knights.

Kailua at Campbell, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Surfriders (0-1) were shutout, 35-0, at Aiea a week ago and play a Red West opponent for the second consecutive week. Against Na Alii, Kailua ran the ball 33 times for 61 yards (1.8 yards per attempt) and threw 26 times with just eight completions for 87 yards. The Sabers (1-0) opened with a 21-7 road win over Kaiser in storm-like conditions in week one. QB Isaac Hurd factored into all three Campbell scores. He threw a pair of touchdown passes to SB Kainoa Perry and rushed for another TD against the Cougars. The Sabers, who were without NG Toese Tia (neck) and WR Amosa Amosa Jr. (academics) last week, allowed just 120 yards and one TD by Kaiser.

McKinley at Kapolei, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers (0-0) will be making their 2013 debut after Roosevelt forfeited their scheduled-opener last week. MLB/RB Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta, a four-year starter, and second-year starter QB/FS Denzel Kalahiki-Gasper are key two-way players for fourth-year coach Joe Cho. McKinley finished fourth in the OIA Red East a year ago and lost to Campbell in an OIA Tournament first-round game. The Hurricanes (1-0) easily handled a much smaller Pearl City team, 42-7, in their opener Friday. Campbell-transfer RB Tristan Pebria carried 19 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns – including a 71-yard scoring run. QB Aizon Kahana was an efficient 5 of 7 for 66 yards passing and two TDs while the defense held Pearl City to 129 offensive yards.

Kaimuki at Waipahu, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Masa Yonamine Athletic Comple

The Bulldogs (1-0) were led by RB Randon Tuitama in a 28-7 win over Waialua in their opener. Tuitama rushed for 194 yards on just nine carries with touchdown runs of 99 and 73 yards in the first half. QB’s Tevita Lino (6 of 8 for 105 yds.) and Kainalu Spencer (2 of 2 for 57 yds.) each threw a TD pass against the Bulldogs. The Marauders (0-0) were idle in week one after a 2-7 record and sixth-place finish in the OIA Red West in 2012. QB Kai Mercado-Aiona assumes the reigns of the offense with the graduation of Kaimi Paredes. LB’s Mark Failauga and Jonathan Nagaseu, along with CB Dominick Marshall, are players to watch on the defensive side of the ball.

Moanalua at Waianae, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Raymond Torii Field

Na Menehune (0-1) took one on the chin last week in a 39-9 home loss to Mililani. Moanalua generated just one score 97 offensive yards, including minus-36 rushing yards. QB Micah Kaneshiro was 16 of 34 for 133 passing yards with three INTs and a TD while under pressure all night. The defense allowed 444 yards and five touchdowns by Mililani, including 20 first-quarter points. The Seariders (1-0) successfully re-opened Raymond Torii Field with a 33-16 win over Farrington last week after nearly two years without a home game. With the bleachers finally repaired, Waianae hosts it second straight home contest against an OIA Red East opponent. RB Jemery Willes scored on TD runs of 10 and 49 yards and DB Ronald Matautia had a pick-six against the Govs.

Waiakea vs. Hilo, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium

The Warriors (0-1) were shutout, 34-0, by Hawaii Prep in their opener Saturday and things don’t get any easier with Friday’s non-league game against crosstown rival Hilo. Waiakea allowed 27 first-half points to HPA while it generated just 152 yards of total offense for the game. RB Noah Aweau-Landford carried 26 times for 83 yards and had one of his team’s three INTs against Ka Makani. The Vikings (0-0) are making their 2013 debut after a 5-3 finish in the BIIF last year. In its first season under former Kamehameha-Hawaii coach David Baldwin, Hilo reached the league D1 title game but lost to Kealakehe and swept all three meetings with Waiakea last season. The teams will play again in a league game on Oct. 12, the final week of the BIIF regular season.

Leilehua at Iolani, Saturday, 2 p.m. at Kozuki Stadium (OC16)

The Mules (0-0) will be opening the 2013 season with an afternoon road game at what will surely be a blazing-hot Kozuki Stadium. Leilehua finished with a 7-4 mark overall and 4-2 in the OIA Red West, but missed out on one of three league state-tournament berths. QB Mack Eberhardt, a transfer from Groton, Mass., has taken over for Justin Jenks at the center of the Mules offense. The Raiders (1-0) opened defense of their six previous Division II state titles with a 51-36 win over Kalani Saturday in the 50th Annual Father Bray Memorial Football Classic. RB Jordan Ross rushed for 101 yards and three TDs on seven carries in just one quarter and WR Keoni-Kordell Makekau caught seven passes for 110 yards and two TDs.

Waimea at Hawaii Prep, Saturday, 2 p.m.

The Menehunes (1-0) are coming off a 42-0 win over Anuenue in which it racked up 450 rushing yards. Destin Miguel ran wild for 270 yards and three touchdowns while Acetyn Emayo added 116 yards and two scores. Waimea averaged an astronomical 15 yards per rush and attempted just three passes for the game. Ka Makani pitched a shutout of their own in a 34-0 non-league win over Waiakea Saturday. RB Bobby Lum carried 23 times for 164 yards and two TDs, while Justin Perry, Nicky Palleschi and Kellen Gillins each hauled in a TD pass against the Warriors. HPA held a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and allowed just 152 offensive yards by Waiakea for the game.

Kapaa vs. Lahainaluna, Saturday 4:30 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium

The Warriors (1-0) opened with a 56-12 win over 2012 D2 state semifinalist Nanakuli Friday and hope to keep the momentum going on the Valley Isle this week. QB Fresno Masaniai scored on runs of 67 and 11 yards and threw a 25-yard TD pass to Kaikea Sonoda to help Kapaa build a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The Lunas (0-0) did not play last week and return to the field for the first time since a 36-33 loss to Iolani in the D2 state title game in Nov. Lahainaluna returns 10 starters from a team that went 9-2 last year and won the MIL crown outright. FS Kiko Fonohema and MLB Bronson Kaina lead a defensive unit that allowed just under 113 yards and seven points per game in 2012.

Konawaena vs. Maui, Saturday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium

The Wildcats (0-0) will be making their 2013 debut in a rematch of a game they won, 38-17, in Kealakehua last season. However, the result was reversed as one of three Konawaena forfeits due to the use of an ineligible player. Saturday’s game will be the nightcap of a non-league doubleheader featuring teams from three different islands at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku (Kapaa and Lahainaluna face off in early game). Konawaena won the BIIF D2 title a year ago, but lost to Nanakuli at home in the state tournament opening round. QB Brandon Howes will be making his first start for the Wildcats, who saw 2012 starter Lii Karratti move to Oahu and transfer to Kaiser. Four-year starter Evan Yamaguchi leads the defense from his middle linebacker position. The Sabers (1-0) finished second in the MIL D1 race behind Baldwin last year and opened 2013 with a 51-0 rout of Saint Francis in the Saints first-ever varsity game last week. RB Mario Fernandez rushed for 124 yards and two TDs in the win.

Kwansei (Japan) vs. Kauai, Saturday, 7 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium

The Fighters, here all the way from Osaka, are hardly new to the Garden Isle. Kwansei has been playing both Kauai and Kapaa for more than 10 years in non-league games. The Red Raiders (0-0), who were idle in week one, are coming off a 8-2 season and KIF championship in 2012. Kauai returns 11 starters from a team that narrowly lost to Radford, 22-21, in a D2 state tournament first-round game, but had a new coach in former JV head Tommy Cox. The Red Raiders have won nine of the last 10 league crowns.

OAHU INTERSCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATON

WHITE CONFERENCE

Kalaheo vs. Roosevelt, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium

The Mustangs (0-1) return from the Big Island, where they narrowly lost at Kamehameha-Hawaii, 26-23, last week. RB Makena Johnston rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and recorded one of his team’s two INTs against the Warriors. Kalaheo held a four-point lead late in the game, but allowed a 55-yard TD run in the final minutes. It will be the season debut for the Rough Riders (0-1), who forfeited their opener against McKinley due to low numbers and injuries. Kalaheo finished fourth in the White Conference a year ago, but lost to Radford in the league semifinals. Roosevelt went just 1-7 in 2012 to finish eighth in the nine-team White.

Anuenue at Radford, Saturday, 4 p.m. at John Velasco Stadium

Na Koa (0-1) opened the season on the road with a non-league loss to Waimea, 42-0, at historic Hanapepe Ballpark on Kauai. Anuenue got 193 of its 282 yards of total offense from its rushing game, but was unable to punch in any scores. Meanwhile, it’s defense allowed 450 rushing yards and six TDs by the Menehunes. The reigning OIA champion Rams (1-0) were the lone White Conference team to win their opener last week with a 47-15 drubbing of Pac-Five. QB Cody Lui-Yuen threw for 403 yards with five TDs and one INT while WR’s Absolom Henry (5 catches for 153 yards) and Jameson Pasigan (4 catches for 84 yards) pulled in two TD passes apiece against the Wolf Pack.

Kalani at Kaiser, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium

The Falcons (0-1) staged a valiant second-half comeback attempt, but ultimately lost to Iolani, 51-36, in the Father Bray nightcap Saturday. RB Ikona Mamiya (10 rushes for 75 yards) and WR Brandon Roberts (9 receptions for 85 yards) scored two TDs apiece and WR Trevor Yamashita (5 receptions for 105 yards) caught another score. The defense allowed 495 offensive yards by Iolani, including 319 by air. The Cougars (0-1) looked out of sorts in their opener Friday, a 21-7 home loss to Campbell. The offense gained just 120 yards for the game and did not convert a third down while the defense allowed three first-half scores by the Sabers.

Waialua at Nanakuli, Saturday, 6:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs (0-1) fell behind 28-0 at home last week en route to a 28-7 loss against Kaimuki. Waialua registered 158 yards of total offense while it allowed 364 by the visiting Bulldogs, including 202 rushing yards. The Golden Hawks (0-1) return home following a 56-12 loss to Kapaa in Lihue Friday. It was the varsity coaching debut for former University of Hawaii and Nanakuli defensive tackle Keala Watson, who led the Golden Hawks to a league JV championship a year ago. Waialua went winless (0-9) in 2012 and finished last in the White, while Nanakuli was the league runner-up to Radford and a state semifinalist.
