Sometime this season, in fact it could be as early as Thursday, Punahou's Kale Ane will become the 25th member to join century career coaching wins in Hawai'i high school football.Ane, entering his 15th season as coach of the Buffanblu, could have achieved the milestone in grand fashion last year. But Kahuku spoiled it with a 42-20 win for the Division I state football title. The Buffanblu will make their season debut Thursday when they take on O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West power Mililani in a non-league game at John Kauinana Stadium. The game will be aired on OC 16 (channel 12). Kickoff is 7 p.m.The game is a rematch of last season's Division I state semifinals that Punahou won 49-19. The last time they met in preseason was 2009, when Mililani won, 16-9.When Ane gets his 100th career win, he will be the fourth active coach in the club. Leading the way is 'Iolani's Wendell Look (162-100-3), the fifth winningest coach all-time. Next is Lahainaluna's Robert Watson at 143-94-6 followed by 'Aiea's Wendell Say at 112-95-1. (The records reflect this past weekend's games.)In fact, Ane is closing in on becoming the school's winningest coach. The legendary Dave Eldredge is 103-41-4.Among the 24 in the 100-win club is the only 200-game winner: Former Saint Louis coach Cal Lee at 240-32-5. He is still active, but as defensive coordinator at Kalani.
The chart below reflects records before the start of this season.
Notes: Lahainaluna's Robert Watson has been a co-coach with Garrett Tihada since 2008. Watson also was a co-coach with Mike Arakawa in 1989 and 1991. If Tihada becomes a sole coach in the future, his tenure would begin with his first season as a co-coach.
