Week one of prep football is in the books and here's some of what stood out to me:

• There weren't a lot of close games to open the season. In fact, seven of the weekend's 17 games resulted in shutouts and 15 games were decided by 14 points or more. Only one game (aside from Roosevelt forfeit against McKinley, which officially goes down as a 6-0 win for the Tigers) was decided by less than a touchdown: Kamehameha-Hawaii's 26-23 win over Kalaheo Saturday.

• Kapaa's 56-12 rout over 2012 Division II state semifinal Nanakuli was arguably the surprise of the weekend. It was surely not the varsity coaching debut that Keala Watson hoped for, but the payoff might be down the line for the Golden Hawks. Trips - especially those off-island - typically go a long way toward helping with team bonding, which hopefully for Watson, will translate to his squad jelling sooner rather than later. A home game against a struggling Waialua team to open the OIA White schedule Saturday might be just what the doctor ordered.

• Mililani coach Rod York and Iolani coach Wendell Look have a few things in common: Both are Iolani graduates and both have to make a tough call in regards to their respective quarterback situations. The Trojans are auditioning sophomore McKenzie Milton and senior Robert Faleafine to succeed record-setting, two-year starter Jarin Morikawa while senior Easton Tsubata and junior Austin Jim On are vying to replace ILH all-star Reece Foy for the Raiders. Here's a blind comparison of the QB stats for both teams from this weekend's games.

• First-year coach Doug Cosbie picked up win No. 1 in his tenure at Kamehameha with a 15-0 shutout of Castle Friday in Kaneohe. Cosbie, who was previously athletic director at Menlo College (Calif.), voiced his displeasure with the Warrior offense, which generated 212 yards of total offense, despite negative two yards from the passing game. However, the price of victory proved costly for the Warriors, who lost junior RB Kaulana Apelu with a knee injury in the first half. Apelu broke out in 2012 with 637 rushing yards - the 10th best mark in Division I - and 8 TDs. He gained 59 yards on 11 carries Friday night before sustaining the injury. In his absence, senior Brandon Kahookele ran for a game-high 138 yards on 18 attempts, including a 31-yard fourth-quarter TD run. Cosbie said he expects Apelu to miss a couple of weeks. Kamehameha hosts Farrington, which will be eager to redeem itself after a 33-16 loss at Waianae, at Kunuiakea Stadium Friday night.

• Teams from the OIA Red West flexed their muscles over the weekend, going a combined 5-0 and outscoring their opponents 170 points for against 39 points allowed. Here are the league records with points for and points against after week 1:

-BIIF: 2 wins-1 loss (0-1 D1/2-0 D2); 60 points for-57 points against

-ILH: 4 wins-2 losses (2-0 D1/2-2 D2); 169 PF-152 PA

-KIF: 2 wins-0 losses; 98 PF-12 PA

-MIL: 1 win-2 losses (1-1 D1/0-1 D2); 72 PF-84 PA

-OIA Red East: 2 wins (1 by forfeit)-4 losses; 59 PF-129 PA

-OIA Red West: 5 wins-0 losses; 170 PF-39 PA

-OIA White: 1 win-8 losses; 139 PF-287 PA
