Saint Louis-Mililani tops Saturday showdowns

A pair of showdowns between the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and the Oahu Interscholastic Association highlight Saturday's slate of games. Defending Division I state champion Saint Louis visits last year's OIA titlist, Mililani, while 2010 D-1 state runner-up Waianae meets four-time D-2 state champ Iolani earlier in the day.

Also, the Maui Interscholastic League opens its regular season while the OIA White is in its second week of league play.

INTERLEAGUE

Saint Louis at Mililani, 7 p.m.

The Crusaders (2-0) and Trojans (1-1, 0-1 OIA Red West) haven't met on the field since the 2008 season, but surely, these teams know each other well. Saint Louis head coach Darnell Arceneaux spent three years calling the shots at Mililani before returning to his alma mater after the 2009 season. Rod York, who served as Arceneaux's defensive coordinator for two seasons, took over the reigns last year and led the Trojans to their first league crown.

Saint Louis, no. 2 in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings, easily defeated Kaiser, 51-0, last week and will be playing its third consecutive road game Saturday. No. 9 Mililani can erase the memory of a 14-7 loss to Radford last week, in which it led 7-0 at halftime, with a win over the Crusaders.

The Trojans' undersized offensive line will have its hands full with defensive ends Kalei Auelua (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) and Kamalei Correa (6-3, 245). Playmakers Kaimi Wilson (nine catches for 185 yards vs. Moanalua) and Deshawn Duncan-Benson (eight grabs for 143 yards vs. Radford) will need big games for Mililani.

Both teams are working in new quarterbacks after the Crusaders lost Marcus Mariota and the Trojans lost Trent McKinney - both to graduation. Saint Louis' Kawai Mook-Garcia has completed 58 percent (28 of 50) of his pass attempts for 392 yards with three touchdowns against two interceptions while Mililani's Jarin Morikawa has three TDs against five picks. He has thrown for 499 yards and completed 54 percent (44 of 82) of his passes.

Through two games, the Crusaders have scored 73 points and allowed just 14. Opponents have averaged just 72 offensive yards against them. The Trojans have had little success running the ball (minus 5 yards through two games) and turned it over seven times against Radford.

Kickoff at John Kauinana Stadium is set for 7 p.m. The game will be televised live statewide on OC16.

Waianae at 'Iolani, 2 p.m.

The Seariders (0-2, 0-1 OIA Red West) will visit Eddie Hamada Field for an afternoon game against the Raiders (1-1). Waianae, who will be playing its third straight road game to open the season, is looking to avoid an 0-3 start for the second consecutive year. After being shutout at Kahuku in week one, the Seariders were on the wrong end of a 21-14 overtime game at Campbell last week.

Standout running back Jaylen Mitchell, who broke out with 127 yards and two touchdowns in a state semifinal win over Mililani last year, has yet to play this season, and Waianae's usual run-heavy Wing-T has not produced the results fans are used to seeing (46 yards total, 0.8 yards per rush). Quarterback Kekoa Kaluhiokalani passed for 245 yards and a touchdown against the Sabers.

The Raiders, who are 10th in the SL Power Rankings, are playing a Division-I opponent for the third straight week. After a season-opening 26-7 win over Radford in the Father Bray Classic, Iolani was run over by No. 4 Farrington last week. The Govs pounded out 443 rushing yards (8.7 yards per rush) and limited the Raiders' run-and-shoot offense to 155 total yards.

Kamehameha-Hawaii at Keaau, 5 p.m.

The campuses of these two relatively new schools are just a few miles apart south of Hilo. The Warriors (2-0) are off to a hot start, having knocked off last year's Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I champions, Kealakehe in Kailua-Kona, while the Cougars (0-2) have scored just six points and allowed 58 through two games.

Kau at Honokaa, 6 p.m.

The Dragons (1-1), who won the BIIF Division I crown in 2009, faltered with a 31-0 loss at Waimea last week after opening the season with a 19-13 win over Hilo. This will be the Division-II Trojans' first game of 2011.

Mount Douglas vs. Kapaa at Vidinha Stadium, 7 p.m.

After opening the season with a 27-26 win over Kalani, the Warriors (2-0) routed Kamehameha-Maui, 36-0, on Kauai last week. The Rams, who are here all the way from Victoria, Canada, compete in the British Columbia High School Football Association and won their provincial AA division championship in 2009.

OIA WHITE

Nanakuli vs. Kalaheo at Kailua, 7 p.m.

The Golden Hawks (0-2, 0-1) will be making the trek across Oahu to try to reverse their fortunes. Nanakuli allowed six yards per carry and three rushing touchdowns in last week's loss to Waipahu, which doesn't bode well against the Mustangs' (1-0, 1-0) veer option attack. Kalaheo racked up 348 rushing yards and averaged over 10 yards per attempt.

Waialua vs. Kalani at Kaiser, 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1) were shutout at home last week, 40-0, by Kalaheo. They allowed 348 rushing yards and gained just 114 yards on offense in the loss. The Falcons (0-1) had an early bye last week after a 27-26 loss to Kapaa in their opener. Kalani plays five of its next six games at home.

Kaimuki def. Anuenue (forfeit)

Na Koa (0-2, 0-2) were forced to concede this one earlier in the week due to numerous players serving a suspension after a 4th quarter fight last week against Pearl City ended the game prematurely. The Bulldogs (3-0, 2-0) shutout McKinley, 22-0, in their OIA White opener.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE

King Kekaulike at Lahainaluna, 1:30 p.m.

Na Alii (0-1) were shutout by Kauai, 27-0, last week in a game played at Vidinha Stadium. The Lunas (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening 14-0 loss to Pac-Five with a 26-6 win over Kea'au last week.

Kamehameha-Maui vs. Maui at War Memorial Stadium, 7 p.m.

The Warriors (0-1) are still looking for their first points of the year after a 36-0 loss in Lihue last week in the season opener against Kapaa. The Sabers (0-1) also suffered a road loss to start their season, falling 21-7 against Waiakea in Hilo.
