KAPOLEI - Mikal Peyton caught a pair of touchdowns passes from Kenan Sadanaga to lead Leilehua to a 27-19 win over Kapolei in the regular-season opener for both teams Friday night.

The Mules - tied for fourth in the ScoringLive Power Rankings - jumped out to a 27-0 lead by halftime, then held off a second-half rally by the host Hurricanes to improve to 1-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference. A crowd of about 1,000 at Kapolei High School dealt with blustery conditions and saw a near blowout turn into a nail biter in the closing minutes.

"This feels very good to come out with a win in the opening game of the (regular) season," said Peyton, who had 10 receptions for 144 yards, both game highs. "We've trained hard for this."

After falling behind by four scores after two quarters, Kapolei rallied with 19 consecutive points. The Hurricanes went scoreless on their first eight possessions before capitalizing on their next three.

After an interception by Kaeo Kanoa on the second play of the third quarter, Kapolei quarterback Trey Kamachi got his team on the board with a 19-yard run. Nathaniel Ruiz converted the extra point following the quarterback keeper to close it 27-7.

Sadanaga was picked off a second time by Kanoa two plays later to give the Hurricanes possession at the Mules' 48-yard line. A 26-yard draw play by fullback Darrius Lopez and a 16-yard scamper by Kamachi set-up at 1-yard touchdown run by Jacob Kukahiko on third-and-goal. The PAT was no good and the Leilehua lead was cut to 27-13 with 6:15 left in the third quarter.

Leilehua's ensuing drive stalled and it was forced to punt away to the Hurricanes.
Kamachi led the triple-option offense on a 15-play drive that covered 82 yards and was highlighted by an 11-yard Kamachi TD run. Lopez picked up three yards on a pivotal fourth-and-1 earlier in the drive and the Hurricanes were aided by a 15-yard, personal foul against the Mules following a third-down play. The PAT failed and Leilehua held a 27-19 lead with 11:14 to play.

The Kapolei defense managed a stop on Leilehua's next drive, but a muffed punt return was recovered by the visitors at their own 49. However, Sadanaga was intercepted for a fourth time later in the drive, but the Hurricanes' fumbled two plays later and the Mules' Jeremy Taua fell on the loose ball with 6:31 left.

"That really took the wind out of our sails," Hernandez said. "When we muffed that punt, we would have had first-and-10 from about the 50 (yard line) with about seven or eight minutes to play at that point, we really felt like we were moving the ball on the ground."

Kamachi and the Hurricanes got the ball back with 4:36 after a three-and-out and got down to the Leilehua 39 before turning it over on downs. The Mules regained possession with one minute remaining and ran out the clock.

It was a tale of two halves as Leilehua racked up 258 of its 335 offensive yards in the first two quarters. The Mules were held to three second-half first downs.

"They made some good adjustments in the second half, we tried to stay with what worked for us in the first half, but they were able to adjust to that very well," Leilehua interim head coach Mark Kurisu said.

Kapolei got things going in the second half after struggling mightily in the first.
"We dropped 12 passes in the first half and I think that kind of killed us in terms of stopping our drives," Hurricanes' coach Darren Hernandez said. "We've got to play for four quarters. You don't get a medal for playing hard for two quarters and that's what we did. In the second half, we finally woke up and played to our potential."

The Mules scored with minutes left in the first quarter on a 37-yard pass play from Sadanaga to Peyton. Peyton got past his defender and with no safety deep, Sadanaga floated a deep ball down the middle of the field into his waiting hands. However, the extra point was blocked to give Leilehua a 6-0 lead.

After the Hurricanes went three-and-out early in the second quarter, Sadanaga marched the Mules 50 yards on five plays, capped by his 25-yard scoring pass to Cole DeCorte. Sadanaga layed off a screen pass to DeCorte in the left flat and the running back carved through the Kapolei defense en route to the end zone. Momiyama tacked on the PAT to make it 13-0.

On its next drive, Leilehua extended its lead on a screen pass from Sadanaga to Allan Racette, who raced 53 yards down the left sideline for the score. The Mules added a touchdown just before the half on a 31-yard scoring strike from Sadanaga to Peyton, who beat three defenders on the streak pattern. The play was set-up by a Rivers Orillo's interception of Kamachi. Sadanaga finished 23-of-33 passing for 299 yards with four touchdowns against four interceptions.

Kapolei (1-1, 0-1 Red West) struggled holding onto the ball and lost two of its eight fumbles for the game. Kamachi, who saw his first action this season after missing the entire preseason while on a baseball trip, accounted for 237 yards of total offense (128 passing, 109 rushing).

Leilehua, which played without slotback Jeremiah Andrade (concussion), was flagged 17 times for 162 yards.
