Big Island teams are top seeds for girls' basketball tourneys


Two-time defending champion Konawaena is the top seed for the Hawaiian Airlines Division I state girls' basketball tournament.

Konawaena is the top seed for the Division II tournament.

Both tournaments open Tuesday and conclude with the title games Friday at the Blaisdell Arena.

DIVISION I

KONAWAENA WILDCATS, top seed, BIIF champion
Appearance: 14th
Record: 28-12, 23-8 in championship bracket, five titles
Note: Have played in seven of the last nine title games

KAMEHAMEHA WARRIROS, second seed, ILH champion
Appearance: 21st
Record: 54-14, 43-12 in championship bracket, eight titles
Note: Won a play-in game in 1988 en route to its first state title

LEILEHUA MULES, third seed, OIA Red champion
Appearance: Third
Record: 2-4, 1-2 in championship bracket
Note: First appearance since 2000

LAHAINALUNA LUNAS, fourth seed, MIL champion
Appearance: 22nd
Record: 20-37, 9-20 in championship bracket, one title
Note: Won its only title appearance (2010).

HILO VIKINGS, BIIF runner-up
Appearance: Ninth
Record: 12-12, 2-8 in championship bracket
Notes: First appearance since 1996

IOLANI RAIDERS, ILH runner-up
Appearance: 20th
Record: 46-19, 38-15 in championship bracket, four titles
Note:  9-0 in first-round games.

MILILANI TROJANS, OIA Red runner-up
Appearance: Sixth
Record: 6-9, 2-5 in championship bracket
Note: Hasn't gotten past the quarterfinals.

KAIMUKI BULLDOGS, OIA Red third place
Appearance: Fifth
Record: 2-7, 0-4 in championship bracket
Note: Best finish was consolation title in 1992.

WAIANAE SEARIDERS, OIA Red fourth place
Appearance: Fourth
Record: 3-6, 3-3 in championship bracket
Note: First appearance since 1984.

ROOSEVELT ROUGH RIGERS, OIA Red fifth place
Appearance: 16th (15th in D1)
Record: 23-22, 12-15 in championship bracket
Note: Won inaugural D2 title in 2004.

KAISER COUGARS, OIA Red sixth place
Appearance: Seventh
Record: 9-10, 4-6 in championship bracket
Note: Best finish was third in 1989.

MAUI SABERS, MIL runner-up
Appearance: 13th
