The four-day sprint that is the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships began with an eight game marathon.

Sixteen teams took to the pitch across eight fields at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex for the opening round of the tournament, with not a whole lot of surprises to be had, particularly in the Division I tournament, where each of the four advancing to the quarterfinals did so by multiple goals.

MOANALUA 4, KING KEKAULIKE 1

Moanalua got on the board early and looked to be rounding into post-season form in a 4-1 win over King Kekaulike.

"At the end of our season we didn't end the OIA season the way we wanted to, so the way we started off today we definitely wanted to make sure that we were coming into this game this state tournament starting off on the right foot." said Moanalua head coach Nikki Dela Pena.

That good start came courtesy of Nikki Higa's goal in the second minute, even though it may not have been exactly the way the senior midfielder had planned it.

"That was a pretty lucky goal," remarked Higa when asked about her score. "I think I just drove it down the sideline and I actually tried to cross it in, but somehow it ended up going in (the goal)."

A part of Na Menehune's game plan that did not need any adjustment was the utilization of Storm Kenui, and her role in this game was as expected. Kenui knocked home goals in the 32nd and 39th minutes to help Moanalua head into the intermission with a 3-0 cushion, then completed the hat trick in the 78th, heading home a ball past the keeper into the right corner of the net.

"We always look for Storm, knowing that we can count on her, knowing that she'll be consistent in there, that definitely does give us confidence," remarked Dela Pena. "But having others able to give us shots and opportunities, as well as create opportunties for her (Kenui) definitely will help us (against Iolani)."

A bright spot for the visiting team from the Big Island was a scoring play by Kayela Santiago, who took a pass from center and beat the keeper on the left side of the goal for a Na Alii score in the 64th minute.

Up next for Moanalua is a matchup with top-seed Iolani, a team that Na Menehune lost a 1-0 decision to in last year's Division I semifinals.

"We're actually excited to play them." said Dela Pena. "We played them in the preseason, it was a close game. We know that they have some strong players that we need to mark up on, and I think our girls are ready for that."

KAISER 4, WAIANAE 0

Jaylin Swartz gave Kaiser the early advantage with a goal in the 23rd minute, then kept Waianae off the scoreboard through 80 minutes of play to notch a 4-0 shutout, advancing to a quarterfinal match with fourth-seed Konawaena.

Cougars' midfielder Cori Papapa scored a pair of goals, one in the 43rd and the other ten minutes later in the 53rd to lead the way for the OIA East representatives.

"In the beginning we were a little bit nervous, but getting those two (extra) goals we were more relaxed and calm." said Papapa.

Kaiser and Konawaena met once in the preseason, with the Wildcats taking home the victory.

PUNAHOU 2, PEARL CITY 0

The Buffanblu took control early on a goal by Jensen Toner in the 12th minute, then added an insurance score by Dempsey Banks in the 62nd to secure a first round win over Pearl City, 2-0.

KAHUKU 2, KEALAKEHE 0

Renee Oei scored a pair of goals for Kahuku in the span of just two minutes as Kahuku held Kealakehe scoreless the rest of the way for a 2-0 shutout victory.

DIVISION II

LEILEHUA 1, KAMEHAMEHA-HAWAII 0

Elizabeth Dumlao's goal in the 33rd minute proved to be the difference as the Mules advanced over the Warriors from the Big Island.

KAUAI 5, SEABURY HALL 0

The Red Raiders got goals from five different scorers, topping the Spartans to advance into the quarterfinals.

NANAKULI 3, HONOKA'A 1

Mapu Ku scored a pair of goals, one in the 24th and the other in the 46th, to lead the Golden Hawks to a 3-1 win over Honoka'a.

MAKUA LANI 3, KALAHEO 2

Karissa Komo's score in the 65th minute, her second of the game, lifted the Lions over the Mustangs.
