Boys Basketball
No. 1 Oak Hill dominates Moanalua, 108-33

Coming in as the nation's No. 1-ranked boys basketball team according to ESPN Rise and not disappointing a crowd of about 750 at 'Iolani Gym last night, Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) blitzed Moanalua, 108-33, in the opening round of the 27th Annual 'Iolani Prep Classic.

The Warriors will face defending state champion 'Iolani in tomorrow's 5 p.m. quarterfinal.

Oak Hill wasted no time in showing why it is ranked No. 1, racing to a 21-1 lead barely five minutes into the game with a spectacular display of silky fast-break alley-oop dunks and seemingly effortless 3-point shooting.

Senior point guard Quinn Cook, who has signed a national letter of intent to play for Duke University next season, had eight points and five nifty assists in the first period as the Warriors led 32-10 heading into the second.

More electric plays followed, as Oak Hill extended the lead to 50-12 at halftime.

That was despite Cook eventually resting a tender knee, which is recovering from torn meniscus surgery and was wrapped in ice before the game was over.

"He does that (ice the knee) after every practice and after every game," said Warriors coach Steve Smith, who added Cook will probably have to do it all season. "It just swells up a little. He's at about 80 or 90 percent."

Cook still finished with a game-high 17 points -- including three 3-pointers -- to go with seven assists. Keith Hornsby added 16 points, Kansas-bound guard Ben McLemore chipped in with 15 points and four other players finished in double-digits.

Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) 71, Mililani 34

The Wildcats' 4,500-mile journey to the middle of the Pacific Ocean evolved into a short, smooth ride into the quarterfinals.

The victory sets up tomorrow's 3:30 p.m. matchup against Dr. Phillips (Orlando). Dr. Phillips is Florida's defending 6A runner-up and ranked No. 45 in the nation by ESPN Rise.

Wheeler went 24-6 last season and finished as the No. 5 team in Georgia.

The Wildcats sped to a 21-2 lead in the first five minutes, 14 seconds, including an 18-0 run sparked by Derrick Evans' 3-pointer. It was 27-7 after the first period, 36-11 some 90 seconds into the second and 47-20 by halftime as Wheeler scored almost at will with mostly fast-break layups or short transition pull-up jumpers.

The lead grew to 63-28 entering the fourth quarter.

"They looked pretty good, although there is always room for improvement," Wildcats coach Doug Lipscomb said. "We arrived at 4:40 p.m. (Wednesday), made sure they got plenty of rest, then had a shootaround this morning."

Wildcat forwards Charles Mitchell and Tevin Reeves -- who stand 6-feet-6 and 6-5, respectively-- had a field day around the basket against Mililani's smaller posts, who are more in the 6-2, 6-3 range.

Reeves finished with a game-high 15 points, Mitchell added 14 points and Karriem Simmons contributed with 10 points.

Hassan Richardson led Mililani with 10 points.

Wheeler is off today, and Lipscomb said he plans on taking the team to visit Pearl Harbor at some point during the trip -- the farthest West the program has ever traveled.

"We want this to be an enlightening experience for our kids," Lipscomb said.
