Brea Olinda races past Konawaena, 69-42

Konawaena junior Lia Galdeira scored a game-high 24 points in spectacular fashion against the nation's No. 2-ranked girls basketball team last night, but it wasn't enough as Brea (Calif.) Olinda raced past the Wildcats, 69-42.

Brea Olinda, ranked No. 2 by ESPN Rise, will face No. 6 Memphis (Tenn.) Central in tonight's 8 o'clock championship game of the Fourth Annual 'Iolani Prep Classic.

Konawaena, the defending state runner-up, meets Northern California power Archbishop Mitty in the 6:30 p.m. third-place game.

The Wildcats had scored a landmark victory Thursday over Missouri defending state champ Incarnate Word (St. Louis) -- a team that went 30-1 and finished No. 10 in ESPN's final rankings. But Brea Olinda, a program that has nine California state titles and two mythical national crowns on its resume, proved to be too deep and talented to overcome.

"They're so deep and they had fresh legs that kept coming at us," Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa said. "We could only make one basket at a time. Against teams like that, you gotta do everything -- you gotta box out, you gotta make all your layups."

Makayla Awa scored on a layup as time expired in the first period to close the Wildcats to 14-10, but the Ladycats opened the second quarter with Ana Kim's layup and Alexis Perry's 3-pointer to stretch it to 19-10.

Keitra Wallace's three-point play seven seconds before halftime gave Brea Olinda a 30-17 lead at the break.

Konawaena cut it to 32-25 midway through the third period after two free throws by Dawnyelle Awa, but Taylor Spears' free throw started the Ladycats on a 9-0 run that stretched the lead to 41-25 with 1:12 remaining in the quarter.

Courtney Kaupu scored a layup with 30 seconds left to cut it to 43-30, but Brea Olinda opened the fourth period with a 6-2 run and continued to pull away as the clock wound down.

Still, Ladycats coach Jeff Sink came away very impressed with Konawaena, and especially Galdeira, a 5-foot-8 junior guard who scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half.

"She can play at any level, she's definitely a Division I college (prospect)," Sink said. "And I love that point guard (Dawnyelle Awa). Kona is an outstanding team, they're very well-coached. We're clearly deeper, but they hung around and hung around, and they probably played harder than we did for seven-eighths of the game.

"They would probably win 90 percent of the games (in Orange County, Calif.) and split with the best teams we have there."

Wallace led Brea Olinda with 18 points, and Jeanier Olukeme added 10 points.

Danielle Ballard scored a game-high 22 points, including 9-of-11 free throws, to lead the Lady Warriors, who also got 15 points from Aaliyah Whitehead.

Ashley Watson led the Monarchs with 11 points.

Archbishop Mitty closed it to 51-50 with under 50 seconds remaining, but Memphis Central sank four of five free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
