Campbell's Ranches, HBA's Johnson garner weekly honors

Female Athlete of the Week: Alesia Ranches, Campbell softball
The Campbell softball team's run to a third consecutive Division I state softball championship included some towering home runs, a couple of lights-out pitching performances and one spectacular defensive play by Alesia Ranches.

The sophomore left fielder made the play of the tournament — and perhaps the season — in the fifth inning of the Sabers' 11-2 quarterfinal win over second-seeded Maryknoll Thursday.

Ranches put her body on the line, diving in foul territory to catch a ball off the bat of the Spartans' Sydney Kamakaiwi. Just after the ball found her glove for the second out of the inning, Ranches slammed her forehead into the outfield fencing.

"That was an awesome play and that really pumped up the team emotionally and gave them more fight," Campbell coach Michael Hermosura said. "When she made the catch I really didn't see how hard she hit the sign. My first concern was that I was going to lose a player with a concussion, but when we went out there she was fine."

Ranches was cleared to remain in the game by the Sabers' athletic training staff.

"She answered the questions the trainer asked her and I think that brought the game out more in her," Hermosura said. "She's a fighter. She's always been a fighter."

It wasn't just with her glove that Ranches shined last week. The 5-foot-4 right-hander went 6 for 15 at the plate in Campbell's four state tournament games.

Ranches started off with a 2-for-3 day in Wednesday's 8-0 first-round victory over Kealakehe. She had a double and scored a run in the win and followed that up with an RBI against Maryknoll Thursday.

In Friday's semifinal round, Ranches posted a 2-for-3 effort, including three RBI to lead Campbell to a 5-4 win over Pearl City. She also drew a walk and scored the winning run on Zoie Recolan's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh.

"Alesia and Zoie got clutch hits when they needed to," Hermosura said. "Both of them were struggling throughout the season, but defensively we couldn't take them out because they were solid for us there."

Ranches, who was named to the all-tournament team, closed out her week with an RBI-single that gave her team an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning of Saturday's 2-0 win over Mililani in the championship game.

"We changed her role from shortstop to outfield because I just thought we needed more speed and athleticism out there," Hermosura said. "She played the outfield really well. She has good speed, communicates well, she can catch and throw and she really wants to contribute to the team itself."

For the season, Ranches posted a .316 batting average with 11 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Male Athlete of the Week: Michael Johnson, Hawaii Baptist volleyball
When Hawaii Baptist needed points during their state tournament run, the team turned to Michael Johnson.

Johnson averaged 13 kills and hit .250 for the Eagles and amassed 34 total digs in three state tournament games to help HBA capture their seventh-straight Division II championship over Kapaa in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II Boys Volleyball Championships on Saturday.

In the quarterfinals against Castle, Johnson hit .333 for the match and in the semifinals match against Molokai, he posted a double-double with 13 kills (hit .312) and 13 digs and had an ace.

Johnson is listed at 5-foot-9, but his work ethic paid off as he was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and his efforts to perfect his craft is noticed by the coaching staff and his peers.

"He's a player that in every single practice and game, he always goes 100 percent and always tries his best," said setter Davin Rausch, who aided Johnson with passes for kills.

"He's the hardest worker and has a great attitude. He always plays for the team and inspires the boys. He also doesn't take himself seriously, he allows other boys to poke fun and him. When things get tight, he's a stress relief," said Eagles' coach Teoni Obrey, on Johnson.

The Warriors gave the Eagles all they could handle as Kapaa was close to taking the second set. Kapaa closed the gap to a one point lead down the stretch, however Johnson was there for the kill to win set two.

"I think he did really well. This is his first time getting the starting position and he took on that role really well and did what he needed to do to get the job done," said Rausch.

Toward the final stretch of the third set Kapaa tied the game at 20. Johnson placed a kill to give the Eagles a two-point cushion that forced the Warriors to call a quick timeout, but couldn't recover as HBA scored three-straight points to claim the match.
