KAPALAMA HEIGHTS — Kamehameha used a balanced attack to defeat Iolani, 50-20 in its senior game at Kunuiakea Stadium Saturday night.

The Warriors, ranked sixth in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division I Power Rankings, scored on six of their seven first half possessions and churned out a season-high 541 yards of total offense to pick up their first win of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I season.

Junior quarterback Boogie Yam was at the forefront of the Kamehameha attack, completing 12 of his 19 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball three times for 31 yards and two scores.

A playmaker in the passing game for Yam and senior quarterback Justice Young was Jaykob Cabunoc, who had a big game after making the switch from slot receiver to wideout. The 5-foot-7 senior finished with seven receptions for a career-high 152 yards and two second quarter TDs.

First-year coach Abu Maafala said the switch was made after reflecting on the Warriors' league-opening 56-14 loss to Punahou.

"Jaykob is a guy that needs to step in and make more plays for us," he said. "We just tried to put him in a position to go make plays and he did that tonight. He responded really well."

Although Saturday's win was an improvement from the Punahou game, Maafala said that there are still a lot of little things that his team needs to get fixed. All of the Raiders' touchdowns were aided by Kamehameha miscues.

Iolani's first scoring drive of the game came after the Warriors muffed a punt in the first quarter. The Raiders (3-2 overall, 0-2 ILH D2) went three-and-out on their first four possessions, but found new life after recovering the loose ball. A nine-play drive capped by Tai-John Mizutani's 2-yard TD pass to Jordan Miyazawa made it a 17-7 game heading into the second period.

Two Kamehameha helmet-to-helmet calls helped the Raiders on their next series, the second of which resulted in an ejection to free safety Tiger Peterson. The Raiders would just need four plays to score after the ejection, with Mizutani's 2-yard TD pass to Justin Genovia making the score 24-14. Mizutani is a great player and he understands defenses and he started picking us apart."

"I had to walk over there and apologize to (Iolani) coach (Wendell) Look because we had two guys that targeted, and we don't teach that around here," said Maafala. "We have to be more disciplined on defense and in the first half they just went up and down the field on us.

Iolani's final scoring drive of the night was aided by a defensive holding call and a roughing the passer penalty. Running back KJ Pascua had a big 34-yard reception to move the ball inside the red zone and kept in a wildcat package two plays later for a 14-yard TD run to make it a 38-20 game just before the end of the first half.

In total, the Warriors were whistled for six penalties for 84 yards.

Kamehameha bounced back in the second half and shutout the Raiders the rest of the way. The Warriors even added a safety on the final play of the third quarter for the final points of the game.

"There's a lot of little things that we still have to get fixed before we can be really good," said Maafala. "I'm happy the kids came out in the second half and played hard and finished out the game. Hopefully we can keep building from here."

Nakoa Pauole, Kalawaia Pescala and Akalea Kapono had sacks in the Warriors win. Kamehameha also batted a handful of balls at the line and finished with 10 total pass breakups. Junior defensive back Joshua Mahelona led the effort in the secondary with three pass breakups and an interception.

Senior Kickers Adam Stack and Micah Mizo both kicked a field goal and three PATs in the win. Stack, who gave a verbal commitment to play for the University of Oregon, also completed a 29-yard pass while in punt formation to extend the Warriors' second possession. Stack later cashed in on the drive with a 27-yard field goal to give Kamehameha a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Mizutani completed 16 of his 37 pass attempts for 174 yards, two TDs and an interception in the loss. The junior quarterback and Genovia (six catches, 79 yards, one TD) both suffered an injury on the same play with 6:23 remaining in the third stanza.

Helam Baldomero had a game-high 8 1/2 tackles to lead the Raiders defensively.
