NFF announces 12 scholar-athlete recipients


The Hawaii chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced its 12 scholarship recipients for 2013.

Nine schools representing four leagues around the state are among the selections.

The players were selected for their academic achievements, football skills and community service.

This year's selections are:

'Iolani offensive lineman Spencer Kiehm, a ScoringLive All-Hawaii Division II first-team selection.
'Iolani slotback Chad Hanaoka.
'Aiea slotback Jantzen Shinmoto
Maui High's Jared Kapisi
Moanalua receiver Chad Aragon, a ScoringLive. All-Hawaii Division I second-team selection.
Kamehameha-Hawai'i lineman Kevin Davis.
Campbell quarterback Isaac Hurd, a ScoringLive All-Hawaii Division I second-team selection and the OIA Red West Offensive Player of the Year.
Damien Memorial defensive lineman Charleston Cazimero
Farrington defensive back Manly Williams.
Kamehameha-Hawai'i defensive back Phil Aganus
Kamehameha-Kapalama tight end Nicholas Young
Kamehameha-Kapalama wide receiver William Young

For the first time, brothers have been selected from the same class in Kamehameha's Nicholas and William Young.

The players will be honored at the annual NFF Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet on April 27 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Monarch Room. No-host cocktails starts at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon and program to follow at noon.

The keynote speaker is former NFL and University of Hawai'i football player Joe Onosai.

Besides the players, other honorees will be former Kahuku football coach Reggie Torres and Waialua coach Lincoln Barit. Referee Hardy Spoehr will receive the Earl Galdeira Award.
