Winter finalists for Newcomers Award announced


Finalists for the Pizza Hut Newcomer Award for the winter sports season have been announced.

The nominees are (in alphabetical order):

Camy Aguinaldo, Iolani (Basketball) - Raiders' freshman ranked 7th in ILH D1 scoring and was a second-team league selection.

Tyler Allen, Mid-Pacific (Soccer) - Owls' sophomore midfielder scored two goals to propel Mid-Pacific to a state title, and was named to the ILH Division II first team.

Donavyn Futa, Kamehameha (Wrestling) - Warriors' freshman pinned all four of her opponents en route to a state title in the 117 pound weight class, helping Kamehameha-Kapalama win their first state championship in 17 years.

Lia Foster, Punahou (Swimming) - Buffanblu freshman won the 100 yard backstroke, placed 2nd in 100 yard freestyle and swam on Punahou's 400 yard freestyle relay team that won the title. She was also an ILH All-Star First Team selection in both the 100 backstroke and 200 medley.

Hugh Hogland, Iolani (Basketball) - Freshman forward/center averaged nearly four blocks per game in Division I state tourney play to help lift the Raiders' to their first title since 2006, and earned an All-Hawaii Honorable Mention nod.

Kylee Kim-Bustillos, Iolani (Soccer) - Raiders' freshman ranked 5th in scoring in the ILH Division I play and was also named to the league's second team.

Elle Uyeda, Punahou (Basketball) - Freshman guard averaged 9.3 point per game in state tournament play to help Buffanblu win state title, and also garnered All-Hawaii and ILH Division I Honorable Mention honors.

The Pizza Hut Newcomer is awarded for superior performance to a student-athlete participating in their first year of play in varsity athletics.

Freshman, as well as any players who have not yet played in a league contest or state tournament are eligible.

Finalists are selected and announced at the end of each sport season (Fall, Winter and Spring), with the winner announced during the ScoringLive Distinguished Athlete ceremony on May 31.
