Ninth-ranked 'Canes to host sixth-ranked Trojans Friday




The defending division champion has one loss. The rest of the conference? Unbeaten. Such is life in the Red West Conference of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

After two weeks of non-league games, the Red West kicks off its regular season this weekend with three games that feature a clash of teams in the ScoringLive/OC16 Football Power Rankings.

Mililani, the sixth-ranked team in the Power Rankings, travels to No. 9 Kapolei Friday in the UHA Game of the Week.

OAHU INTERSCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATION

RED WEST CONFERENCE

No. 6 Mililani at No. 9 Kapolei, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Trojans (1-1) struggled offensively in a 24-14 loss to Punahou Thursday. Despite 143 rushing yards and two touchdowns by RB Vavae Malepeai, Mililani’s QB duo of McKenzie Milton and Robert Faleafine completed a combined 7 of 18 pass attempts for 59 yards. Two turnover-on-downs in the red zone against the Buffanblu did not help the Trojans’ cause. DE Kelii Padello was a bright spot in the loss, recording four sacks despite sitting out most of the second half. The Hurricanes (2-0) jumped out to a 13-0 lead in a 20-7 win over McKinley Friday. Kapolei is averaging 31 points and 306 yards on offense, while allowing 7 points and 134 yards on defense per game. RB Tristan Pebria ranks fourth in Division I statewide 224 rushing yards and four TDs. The Hurricanes have outscored its two opponents, 62 to 14.

No. 8 Campbell vs. No. 7 Leilehua, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Hugh Yoshida Stadium

The Sabers (2-0) posted a dominating 49-12 win over Kailua Friday, in which QB Isaac Hurd threw for 225 yards with three touchdowns and RB Austin May added three rushing scores. Hurd, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior, has completed 56 percent (23 of 41) of his pass attempts for 305 yards this season with five TDs against zero INTs. Campbell has outscored its two opponents, 70 to 19. The Mules (1-0) are coming off a 56-35 shootout victory at Iolani Saturday, in which they racked up 527 total offensive yards, including 307 rushing. RB Ikaika Piceno amassed 126 rushing yards and two TDs. QB Mack Eberhardt completed 13 of 19 passes for 143 yards against the Raiders, but left the game in the first half with an apparent right thumb injury. Leilehua hosts its next four games in as many weeks at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

No. 5 Waianae at No. 10 Aiea, Saturday, 6:30 p.m.

The Seariders (2-0) held off Moanalua, 28-13, at Raymond Torii Field Friday. RB Jemery Willes rushed for a game-high 159 yards and two TDs on 20 carries to help Waianae tally 337 rushing yards as a team. Willes, who is averaging 7.7 yards per carry, ranks third in Division I statewide with 238 yards and four TDs. Na Alii (2-0) handled Pac-Five, 33-8, in a non-league game Friday. RB’s Fika Tuli (16 rushes, 105 yards, TD) and Mana Kaahanui (10 rushes, 102 yards) both went over 100 rushing yards and WR Shaenen Hernandez-Fonoti added 107 receiving yards and two TD’s. Aiea is averaging just under 360 yards on offense, while holding opponents just under 180 yards per game. Na Alii will be playing their third home game in as many weeks. 

RED EAST CONFERENCE

Kailua at Castle, Friday, 7 p.m. (TV: OC16)

The Surfriders (0-2) are coming off a lopsided 49-12 loss at Campbell Friday, their second straight road loss against a Red West opponent. Kailua opened the season with a 35-0 loss at Aiea. Against the Sabers, Kailua fell behind 21-0 by the second quarter and never recovered. The Surfriders are averaging just 6 points and 198 yards on offense, while allowing 42 points and more than 342 yards defensively. The Knights (1-1) were the lone team from the Red East to pick up a win last weekend, beating visiting Damien, 27-13, Saturday. DB Colby Kruse had a 14-yard pick-six against the Monarchs, one of five interceptions by the Castle defense in the game. WR Kyle Urasaki caught second-half TD passes of  20 and 19 yards as part of 20 straight points by the Knights to close out the game.

Kaimuki at No. 4 Kahuku, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs (1-1) are coming off a 19-14 road loss at Waipahu Friday, in which they generated just 176 yards of total offense, including 40 rushing yards. LB Jorge Rios returned a fumble 60 yards for a score in the fourth quarter, but Kaimuki could not recover from a 19-0 deficit. RB Randon Tuitama was held to 49 rushing yards on 10 carries, but is averaging 12.8 yards per carry for the season. The Red Raiders (0-1) saw their 18-game win streak, which dated back to October of 2011, snapped in their 45-24 loss to Saint Louis Saturday. Kahuku held a 24-23 lead early in the fourth quarter, but allowed 22 unanswered points by the Crusaders. The Red Raiders, who completed just two passes for 16 yards, allowed 523 yards by Saint Louis. It was the most points allowed by Kahuku since a 47-12 loss to Aiea in 1965.

Moanalua vs. McKinley, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium

Na Menehune (0-2) dropped a 28-13 decision at Waianae Friday, their second consecutive loss to a Red West opponent this season. Moanalua lost to Mililani in its opener, 39-9, back on Aug. 9. QB Micah Kaneshiro passed for 295 yards and a TD against the Seariders, but was also intercepted twice. WR Chad Aragon hauled in nine passes for 103 yards – both game-highs – in the loss. The Tigers (1-1) struggled in a 20-7 loss at Kapolei Friday. McKinley posted just 38 yards of offense by halftime and finished with 139 for the game. LB/RB Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta intercepted a pass and rushed for the Tigers’ lone touchdown against the Hurricanes. It was McKinley’s first contested game of the season, as its opener against Roosevelt was forfeited due by the Rough Riders.

WHITE CONFERENCE

Pearl City vs. Kalani, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium

The Chargers (0-1 overall/0-0 OIA White) were idle last week and last played on Aug. 9 in a 42-7 loss at Kapolei. Pearl City lost its first four division games a season ago, then won its last five, only to miss out of one of four playoff spots. The Chargers have a new coach in Robin Kami, who previously led the JV squad under former coach David Hallums. The Falcons (0-2 overall/0-1 OIA White) are coming off a 62-20 loss to rival Kaiser Saturday, in which they allowed 396 yards and nine touchdowns by the Cougars. Kalani is allowing a staggering 56.5 points and 445.5 yards per game by the opposition.

Roosevelt vs. Waialua, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Toshiyuki Nakasone Field

The Rough Riders (0-2 overall/0-1 OIA White) suffered a 15-0 defeat at home against Kalaheo Friday. Roosevelt allowed just 121 yards by the Mustangs, but could muster only 135 itself, including 15 passing yards. The Rough Riders went 1-7 in 2012, with their lone win coming against Waialua. The Bulldogs (0-1 overall/0-1 OIA White) hung tough with Nanakuli in a 22-19 loss Saturday. Waialua trailed 22-6 in the fourth quarter, but pulled within a field goal following touchdown runs by Kebi Dellatan and Taleon Lele. The Bulldogs have been outscored in two games, 50-26.

Radford at Nanakuli, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Rams (2-0 overall/1-0 OIA White) beat up on Anuenue, 67-0, in their White opener Saturday. RBs Tobias Powell and Chance Cacatian rushed for two TDs apiece and QB Cody Lui-Yuen completed 8 of 10 passes for 147 yards and three more scores in the win. Lui-Yuen, a third-year starter, leads all of Division in passing yards with 550 yards on 25-of-47 passing. He has thrown eight TDs, including four to WR Jameson Pasigan, against just one INT. The Golden Hawks (1-1 overall/1-0 OIA White) held off a late charge from Waialua Saturday in a 22-19 win. Chazz Troutman rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the win. Radford won last year’s meeting, 42-7, on Oct. 6 at John E. Velasco Stadium.

Kalaheo vs. Anuenue, Saturday, 5 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium

The Mustangs (1-1 overall/1-0 OIA White) shutout Roosevelt, 15-0, in their White Conference opener Friday at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. RB Makena Johnston rushed 10 times for 95 yards in the win, including TD runs of 33 and 3 yards. Through two games this season, Johnston is averaging 8.8 yards per carry and has totaled four TDs. Na Koa (0-2 overall/0-1 OIA White) got roughed up, 67-0, by Radford Saturday. Anuenue, which has yet to score in 2013, was able to generate just 103 yards of total offense, while allowing 360 by the Rams. Kalaheo won last year’s meeting by a score of 44-28.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE

Maui vs. Baldwin, Friday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium

The Sabers (2-0) have shown no shortage of offense, outscoring their opponents 98 to 37, including a 47-37 non-league win over Konawaena Saturday. Justin Carvalho and Onosai Emelio rushed for two TDs apiece to help Maui rack up 207 rushing yards against the Wildcats. DB Aaron Pierman scored the last of the Sabers’ seven touchdowns on a 30-yard interception return. The Bears (0-1) were off last week after a 55-0 drubbing at the hands of Saint Louis back on Aug. 10. They allowed 507 yards (311 passing/196 rushing) and generated just 146 yards (133 passing/13 rushing) against the Crusaders. Baldwin, which has won the MIL Division I title eight consecutive seasons, took both meetings last season, outscoring Maui, 74 to 22.

King Kekaulike at Kamehameha-Maui, Saturday, 7 p.m.

Na Alii (0-0) will be making their season debut on the road – all four minutes away, driving – at their private-school neighbor in Pukalani. King Kekaulike, which went 1-8 a year ago, has seven returning starters on each side of the ball, including QB Ryley Widell. The Warriors (0-1) had a bye last week after a season-opening 29-21 loss to Damien on Aug. 10. QB Chase Newton threw for 155 yards and two TDs against the Monarchs, but was also intercepted three times. Kamehameha-Maui allowed 366 offensive yards by Damien. The teams split two meetings last year, with the home team winning each time. The game also features two of the MIL’s three first-year coaches in King Kekaulike’s Kyle Sanches and Kamehameha-Maui’s Cody Nakamura.

NON-LEAGUE

Westlake (Calif.) vs. Waipahu, Friday, 7 p.m. at Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex

The Warriors (0-0) finished 6-5 in 2012 in the CIF Southern Section, Marmonte League. With 25 returning lettermen, including second-team all-league WR Alex Egurbide and all-state K Kevin Robledo, things look promising for Westlake in coach Jim Benkert’s 25th season. The Warriors lost to Mission Viejo in the CIF Southern Section Playoff first round. The Marauders (1-1) beat Kaimuki, 19-14, Friday in their season-opener. QB Gavin Marques threw two TD passes and rushed for 103 yards, while fellow sophomore Matthew Leilehua carried 26 times for 124 yards and a TD. Jeddiah Mageo recorded two sack-fumbles and Levi Wong recovered two loose balls in the win.

Konawaena vs. Hilo, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium

The Wildcats (0-1) return to the Big Island following a 47-37 loss to Maui Saturday. Konawaena racked up 412 yards of total offense against the Sabers, including 371 passing yards by QB Brandon Howes. WR Chase Takaki caught 13 balls for 167 yards in the loss. The Wildcats took a 24-7 lead into halftime, but allowed 27 straight points by Maui to start the second half. The Vikings (1-0) opened 2013 with a 36-6 win over cross-town rival Waiakea Friday at Wong Stadium. RB Donavan Faoa Kelley carried 11 times for 118 yards with a TD and WR Hunter Macabio added scores on 14-yard reception and an 85-yard kickoff return. The teams will play again, in a BIIF game, on Oct. 4 at Julian Yates Field.

Kamehameha-Hawaii vs. Iolani, Saturday, 2 p.m. at Kozuki Stadium

The Warriors (1-0) were idle a week ago and last played on Aug. 10, when they held off Kalaheo, 26-23. Three starters each on offense ad defense return from a team that went 10-3 last year, including 7-2 in the BIIF. The defense allowed just 11 points per game in 2012, when Kamehameha-Hawaii lost to Konawaena in the Division II league title game. The Raiders (1-1) lost at home, 56-35, to Leilehua Saturday. They allowed 527 yards of total offense and 35 first-half points by the Mules. WR Chad Hanaoka and SB Keoni-Kordell Makekau caught two TD passes apiece. Iolani is averaging 43 points and 401 yards of offense and 46 points and 483 yards defensively, per game.

Honokaa vs. Waiakea, Saturday, 3 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium

The Dragons (0-0) will be playing their first game of the season Saturday after a 7-4 record in 2012. However, as coach Bobby Embernate quickly notes, he has a very young squad having graduated 23 seniors last year.  The Warriors (0-2) were on the wrong side of a 36-6 game against Hilo Friday. RB Devin Preston rushed for 120 yards on 28 attempts, but Waiakea couldn’t recover from a 28-0 deficit. It has been outscored 70 to 6 by opponents through two games. This will be the first of back-to-back meetings between the teams. Waiakea visits Honokaa next Friday in a BIIF game.

Mount Douglas (Victoria, B.C.) vs. Lahainaluna, Saturday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium

The Rams (0-0) come from a public school of about 1,200 students in Saanich on Victoria Island. “Mount Doug” won the Greater Victoria School District and  theSubway Bowl to capture their second straight Triple-A championship last season. The title game, which the Rams won 51-14 over Vancouver College, is played annually at BC Place, home of the Canadian Football League’s BC Lions. The Lunas (1-0) were once again led by their defense in a season-opening 28-13 win over Kapaa Saturday in Wailuku. Lahainaluna allowed just 6.6 points and 112.9 yards per game in 2012, when it finished 9-2 and lost to Iolani, 36-33, in the Division II state championship game. DE Hercules Mataafa scored on a 34-yard fumble return and FS Kiko Kohler-Fonohema scored on a 68-yard interception return in the win over the Warriors.

Woodbridge (Calif.) vs. Waimea, Saturday, 7 p.m. at Hanapepe Ballpark

The Warriors (0-0) will be making their season debut in Hawaii after a 7-6 record in 2012 in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs third round. Woodbridge is a public school with about 2,200 students that competes in the Irvine City League in Orange County. The Menehunes (1-1) return to the Garden Isle after a 13-8 loss at Hawaii Prep Saturday. RB/DB Acetyn Emayo caught six passes for 119 yards and intercepted a pass while QB Kiliona Russell-Moe threw for 145 yards on 13-of-18 passing. Waimea allowed 329 yards of total offense, including 230 rushing, by HPA. RB Destin Miguel was held to 15 rushing yards a week after he ripped off 270 against Anuenue, but he did score the Menehune’s lone touchdown on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Kealakehe vs. No. 3 Kamehameha, Saturday, 7 p.m. at Kunuiakea Stadium

The Waveriders (0-0) have yet to play a game this season after finishing 2012 with a 10-2 record, including a perfect 8-0 mark in the BIIF. Kealakehe returns three starters from last year’s team on each side of the ball and picked up several transfers, including starting QB Kaimi Wilson (Konawaena). The Warriors (2-0) have been lights out defensively, allowing just three points and 36 total yards through two games. The offense showed vast improvement from the opener – a 15-0 win over Castle – to Friday’s 38-3 rout of Farrington. RB Brandon Kahookele rushed for 200 yards on 22 attempts to help Kamehameha rack up 452 offensive yards. Kahookele leads the state with 338 rushing yards.

Drumheller (Alberta, Canada) vs. Saint Francis, Saturday, 7 p.m. at Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex

The Titans (0-0) are a tier IV team (449 students or less) and two-time provincial champions. Their traveling group, which includes 29 players and 16 parents, has visited Pearl Harbor and attended a luau since arriving in Honolulu Sunday. The town of Drumheller (population 8,100), located 68 miles northeast of Calgary, is famously known as the Dinosaur Capitol of the World. An 86-foot high, fiberglass T-Rex sits next to a 75-foot water fountain in the middle of town. The Saints (0-1) were off last week after a 51-0 loss to Maui in their varsity football debut on Aug. 9. Saint Francis struggled all-around, being held to negative 28 yards of offense, while it allowed 295 yards by the Sabers. The Saints were behind, 39-0, by halftime.
