As the adage goes, "It's not how you start, it's how you finish."
Trailing 8-6 at halftime, Radford did just that, scoring 41 points in the second half to sprint past Pac-Five in the first game of the 50th Annual Father Bray Classic at Aloha Stadium. "No matter what field we're on, we want to make sure we execute and play to the best of our ability. It feels good to come back to the Stadium at the Father Bray Classic and come away with a win and we're happy with that," said Radford coach Fred Salanoa. Pac-Five scored a safety after Radford's punt bounced off one of its own players in the end zone. Wolfpack quarterback Anthony Canencia connected with Roycen Routt for a 45 yard touchdown to put Pac-Five up 8-0. Cody Lui-Yuen hit Jameson Pasigan for a 42-yard touchdown, but the run failed with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter. After a scoreless second quarter, Radford trailed 8-6 heading into halftime. "It's a new team, a young team. Most of our team came up from JV. At the beginning of the game we started off slow. At halftime we talked to each other and knew what we had to do. The mistakes in the first half were basic and simple like catching, throwing, and making the correct reads. In the second half it was about execution," said Lui-Yuen.
"I was pretty upset and frustrated, I never been that upset at halftime before and I gave it to the team. The thing that did not surprise me is that they bounced back in the second half and executed," said Salanoa.
In the third quarter, Radford's Chance Cacatian scored an 18 yard rushing touchdown and Lui-Yuen completed the 2-point conversion to Feru Seumalo to go up, 14-8. "The O-line were making their blocks and the running backs were running the ball well so it put the defense in a bind," said Lui-Yuen. Lui-Yuen found Absolom Henry for 2 consecutive touchdowns: 29 yards and 42 yards respectively and the Rams went up 27-8. The Rams' signal caller would finish the evening with 403 yards passing, completing 17-of-37 passes.
Pac-Five's Canencia hit Sean Kihei in stride for a 41-yard touchdown with 1:57 remaining in the third. In the fourth quarter, it was all Radford. Pasigan caught his second touchdown of the night for 22 yards and Lui-Yuen found Maryknoll transfer Tobias Powell for a 57 yard touchdown. Rashone Osborne put on the exclamation point for Radford with a 16 yard rushing touchdown. "We have an awesome O-Line. Our kids are very small but as far as production, they are the hardest working group on our team. We also have 3 good running backs we can rely on," said Salanoa. Radford hosts Anuenue at 4 pm next Saturday while Pac-Five travels to Aiea on Friday at 6pm.
