HALAWA – With two years of grooming under his belt, Easton Tsubata showed he was ready for the spotlight Saturday night.

The senior quarterback passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns to lead Iolani to 51-36 win over Kalani in the feature game of the 50th Annual Father Bray Memorial Football Classic before a crowd of about 2,500 at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

The Raiders (1-0), winners of the last six Division II state championships, scored early and often to build a 44-12 lead by halftime and withstood a fourth-quarter charge from the Falcons (0-1) to hang on.

“It was good to come away with a win in our first game. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going from here,” said Tsubata, who was the backup to Interscholastic League of Honolulu all-star Reece Foy the past two seasons. “I was pretty nervous before the game, but I just tried to calm myself and do my best.”

Iolani recorded 495 yards of total offense, including 319 passing yards from Tsubata and junior Austin Jim On. Both quarterbacks played all four quarters – rotating every few offensive series – but Tsubata got the starting nod. Jim On was also on-point, connecting on 10 of his 14 pass attempts for 119 yards with one touchdown. The Raiders did not turn over the ball.

“Offensively, our two quarterbacks were very efficient with the ball,” Iolani coach Wendell Look said. “They took care of the ball and put some points on the board.”

The Raiders also effectively ran the ball, pounding out 177 yards on 37 carries and four touchdowns. Sophomore Jordan Ross had seven rushes for 101 yards with three scores – all in the first half – to lead the way.

“The first group was able to run the ball pretty well and they were able to convert first downs,” Look said.

Iolani picked up 26 first downs and converted on 7 of 12 third downs, while Kalani was just 4 of 6 on third downs.

Ross got the Raiders on the board with his 8-yard touchdown run to cap their opening drive. Max Look ran in the two-point conversion to quickly make it 8-0.

Brandon Roberts answered for the Falcons with his 16-yard touchdown pass from Noah Brum, but the two-point conversion was no good.

Iolani countered with rushing scores on its next three drives – a 26-yard Ross scamper up the middle, a 4-yard plunge by Tyler McKenna and a 25-yard jaunt by Ross – to take a commanding 30-6 after the first quarter.

The Raiders extended their lead on a quick strike when Tsubata hit Chad Hanaoka on a 73-yard touchdown pass with eight minutes and 53 seconds left in the second quarter. Two drives later, Jim On hit Keoni-Kordell Makekau for a 37-yard touchdown pass to cap an 11-play, 85-yard drive.

Kalani scored with six seconds until the half on a 2-yard pass from Brum to Roberts. However, the kick was no good and Iolani led 44-12 at the intermission.

Ikona Mamiya's 37-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter made the score 44-20 and Roberts found Trevor Yamashita on a double-pass for a 49-yard scoring strike to pull within 16 points early in the fourth.

The Falcons made it a one-score game with Mamiya's 1-yard touchdown run with 4:25 to play, but Tsubata hit Makekau for a 14-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-2 to put it out of hand. Tsubata completed 13 of 16 passes without an interception.

Despite a successful night, Look is not ready to hand the starting quarterback job to Tsubata just yet. Look, who said he expects to play both quarterbacks again in the Raiders' next game against Leilehua Saturday, is not opposed to using two signal callers.

“I think it's a good situation we have,” Look said. “They both bring a little different things to the table and I don't know, that might be a thought – going with a one, two punch – that might be a thought.”

Kalani recorded 248 of its 439 yards of total offense after halftime. Roberts finished with nine receptions for 85 yards and Yamashita had five grabs for 105 yards. The Falcons, who were 4-5 last year and finished sixth in the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference, opens league play at Kaiser Saturday.

“I was very pleased with the second half and the way we were able to bounce back after the poor start we had in the first half,” Kalani coach Greg Taguchi said. “It just shows the character of the kids and that they're buying into what we have to do. I think this will build confidence for our team, competing against a team like Iolani.”

Iolani, which has won its last five games dating back to last season, hosts Leilehua in a non-league game Saturday at Kozuki Stadium.
