Player of the Year: Anthony "Bubba" Hoopii-Tuionetoa, Baldwin, P/CF, Sr.Hoopii-Tuionetoa was as complete a player as they come. He pitched, he played a stellar centerfield and he hit. He did not allow an earned run during the Maui Interscholastic League season.
It took one of the state's most prolific offenses — Iolani (second in the state in runs scored, first in RBIs) — to score off of him in the semifinals of the state tournament. He was charged with allowing four runs in five innings, but helped his own cause with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in four runs to beat the Raiders, 9-4.
When he was not on the mound, he patroled centerfielder with a wide net, making acrobatic catches to rob opponents of extra bases during the tournament.
Yet, his strongest attribute did not involve his bat, glove or pitching arm.
"Anthony's physical skills speak for themselves but what makes him great is his ability to lead," Bears coach Shane Dudoit said. "With his tools, he could be very conceited and choose not to be a team player, but it's a total opposite in his case. He shows up early every day and doesn't need to be told what to do. Very caring and mindful of others. Very respectful. He understands that he is a part of a team and without everyone's 100 percent, the team would not be successful."
On the mound, Hoopii-Tuionetoa posted a 6-0 record with a 0.80 earned run average, striking out 38 in 35.0 innings pitched. He batted 6 for 10 with seven RBIs in the state tournament, boosting his season average to .359.
Hoopii-Tuionetoa verbally committed to attend Yavapai JC in Arizona but has instead opted to sign with the Minnesota Twins after being drafted No. 484 overall in the 16th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Pitcher of the Year: Stone Parker, Kailua, P, Sr.Kailua's Parker was a picture of patience during his high school career, but his potential was reached this past season when he posted a 6-1 record with a 0.69 ERA. He led the state with 66 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched.
If there were any doubts about his accomplishments against OIA competition, they were squelched when he fired a three-hitter to beat second-seeded and ILH champ Mid-Pacific Institute in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
For Parker, his journey took a while to get to where he is today. He was brought along slowly through his high school career.
"I have coached Stone since he was 10 years old and always knew that he would develop into the pitcher that he was this past season," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "When he was young, he was not the best 12-year-old in the state but had the potential to be the best pitcher he could be late in his high school years. He has always trusted our process and worked really hard to become who he is today."
When Parker started developing pain in his pitching arm, Ishigo worked on the pitcher's mechanics to take some pressure off Parker's arm and shoulder.
"Once we made this decision, he became pain-free," Ishigo wrote.
Parker has signed a letter-of-intent to pitch at the University of Kansas.
Coach of the Year: Shane Dudoit, BaldwinFor leading the Bears to the state title in his second year at the helm, Dudoit was picked as the Coach of the Year.
Five players from Baldwin were tabbed as All-Hawaii selections.
The Bears also racked up a Top 10 ranking in the USA Today Super 25 Baseball National Rankings.
