KAILUA — Iolani rode a big second quarter Friday night to another one-sided victory.

Jonah Chong threw two of his three touchdown passes to Carter Kamana and Kaua Nishigaya ran in a pair of scores to lift the 11th-ranked Raiders to a 33-12 road win over No. 14 Kailua in a Division I football game before a crowd of about 500 fans at Alex Kane Stadium.

Iolani scored 20 points in the second quarter and got five takeaways from its defense to improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in league play.

Kailua, which was shut out through the first three quarters, fell to 0-3. The result will not count toward the Surfriders' league record (0-1), however.  

The Raiders defense made big play after big play throughout the contest.

On the opening drive of the game, the Surfriders ran the ball on all nine of their plays, but lost possession on a fumble near midfield that was recovered by Iolani's Isaac Ignacio — his first of two Friday.

However, Iolani's ensuing possession came to an abrupt halt four plays later when Chong was picked off by Kailua's Kalai Carden-Kiaha. It was Chong's first interception thrown this year.

"We just regrouped as a team and made sure that we told Jonah that we were on the same page and that we were there for him and then to just keep looking our way because we trust that he could bounce back from that," said wide receiver Carter Kamana, who finished with game-highs of eight receptions for 147 yards.

Kailua orchestrated a 15-play drive that covered 62 yards and took more than seven minutes off the clock. An 11-yard pass completion from Raynen Ho-Mook to Kamryn Kahoonei reached the Raiders' 15-yard line, but running back Samson Rasay was stripped on the very next play and Ignacio fell on the loose ball to get his team back the ball.

Three played later, Chong threw a short pass over the middle to a crossing Kamana, who turned on the jets and beat the Kailua secondary to the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown.

"I just caught the ball on a simple drag route across the middle and I just looked downfield and I trusted my other fellow wideouts to make their blocks and I just followed their blocks all the way in for the touchdown," said Kamana, a 6-foot-1, 172-pound junior.

The extra point was blocked, but Iolani caught another break three plays into Kailua's ensuing possession, when a shotgun snap sailed high over the head of Ho-Mook and was booted around a few times. It was eventually recovered by the Raiders' Kyler Mento all the way down at the Kailua 14-yard line, resulting in a 41-yard loss.

Chong and the offense needed just two plays to capitalize. He recycled the turnover into a 14-yard TD pass to a wide-open Rayden Kaneshiro and Mika Makekau tacked on the extra point to make it a 13-0 lead with 9:23 remaining in the first half.

Kailua's next three drives resulted in a pair of three-and-outs sandwiched around another lost fumble.

Iolani added a score just before the intermission on Chong's 4-yard TD pass to Kamana and took a 20-0 lead into halftime.

The score held until early in the fourth quarter, when the Surfriders got on the board with Brian-Allen Kamanu's 4-yard  TD run to cap a 10-play, 73-yard drive that included a pair of third-down conversions — and a pair of offensive fumble recoveries.

The Raiders had an answer in the form of an 11-play, 95-yard drive that culminated with a 2-yard Nishigaya TD run with 6:29 left to play.

Nishigaya also found the end zone on a 16-yard scamper later in the fourth quarter. He finished with 110 yards on 15 carries despite only three attempts for 18 yards before halftime.

After the Makekau PAT, the Raiders took their largest lead at 33-6.

Kailua closed out the scoring with Ho-Mook's 28-yard TD pass to Kahoonei in the closing seconds.

Iolani's 21-point win Friday was its closest margin of victory this season. It opened the year with a 63-0 drubbing of Kalani, followed by last week's 55-14 rout of Waipahu.

"Our defense is super improved this year and I feel like they're just phenomenal. They do a really good job of not only just stopping teams, but forcing turnovers and getting the ball back for ourselves," Kamana said.

Chong was an efficient 15-of-19 passing for 195 yards at halftime and finished 21 of 30.

Ho-Mook finished 15-of-26 passing for 187 yards with two interceptions. Kase Oshiro hauled in five catches for 84 yards and Rasay carried 22 times for 91 yards for Kailua.

Trevor Kan recorded a pair of second-half interceptions for Iolani defensively.

Iolani posted 350 yards of total offense to Kailua's 282.
