Higashionna leading the charge for Pearl City; Bautista's emergence a boon for Mililani

Ethan Higashionna

Pearl City baseball  •   #6  INF  Junior

Just as he did last week, Ethan Higashionna has been leading the charge for the Pearl City baseball team in a number of ways.

Higashionna, a junior infielder and leadoff batter for the Chargers, proved instrumental to his team's 3-1 run in last week's Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament, which culminated with a state tournament berth.

In four games over five days, Higashionna recorded nine hits in 15 at-bats (.600 batting average) to raise his batting average to .415 on the year. The 5-foot-8, 145-pound second baseman leads Pearl City with 22 hits and 16 runs scored this season.

"He's been huge in that leadoff spot in regards to being the guy that gets on base and gets them started early and I think that's one of our biggest plusses last week," first-year Chargers coach Duane Eldredge said of Higashionna, a third-year varsity player.

"He was awesome and he started us off right off the bat," Eldredge added.

Pearl City, which played all four of its OIA tournament games on the road, opened the week at Kaiser in last Tuesday's first round of the 12-team bracket. Higashionna was hit by a pitch – the very first one thrown in the game – and eventually came around to score after a pickoff attempt got away from the Kaiser third baseman.

"It was a very heads-up play by Ethan and an up moment for us because scoring in the first inning is always good," Eldredge noted.

Higashionna stroked a two-out single in his next at-bat, then poked a single to left field in the at-bat that followed. After he grounded out in his third at-bat, Higashionna closed out the day with a bunt single down the third base line in his final plate appearance.

"In a sense I think he almost put the nail in the coffin against Kaiser. Here we were starting to hit the ball and we get a home run and everything, but then he came up and we had a five-run lead and he comes up and executes a drag bunt – just nice and easy – but when you're getting hit and all of a sudden a drag bunt, I mean, that was just perfect and I think it deflated them, I really do, but that's the kind of stuff he does; He mixes things up and does a good job at it," Eldredge described.

The Chargers, who were the fifth seed out of the Western Division, pulled away from the East fourth-seeded Cougars by a final score of 9-3.

The following day, Higashionna batted 2 for 3 – including a two-out RBI single that gave his team a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning – and drew a walk, but it wasn't enough as Aiea, the West top seed, rallied for a 7-3 win in the tournament quarterfinals.

Higashionna kept his hot hitting going against Campbell in a fifth-place semifinal Thursday. He rapped out three singles, stole a base and scored a run in an 8-5 win over the Sabers.

Finally, he closed out the week with a modest 1-for-4 day at the plate in the fifth-place game against Kalani. Higashionna scored one run to help Pearl City pull off the 5-3 win, which assured them one of the OIA's five assured state tournament berths.

"When you have two three-hit games in three days – not counting a two-hit game between that – I mean, what a week," Eldredge said. "I think he gave us a lot of confidence as well."

As a freshman two years ago, Higashionna totaled six hits in 29 at-bats (.207 batting average). Last year, however, he saw hit batting average fall to .032 (1 for 31). In each of his first two seasons on the team, Higashionna was penciled into the bottom third of the batting order. Upon taking over the program this year, however, Eldredge had other plans for Higashionna.

"He only had one hit last year and the biggest thing was, right off the bat, we liked him and we talked to him about leading off and I think his confidence grew and the more his confidence has grown, the more we've seen from Ethan this year," Eldrege said.

Higashionna has hit safely in 12 of 16 games this spring, including eight multi-hit games. He is tied for the third most hits in the OIA, ranks fifth in runs scored and sixth in batting average.

"Against Kalani Saturday he went 0 for 2 in his first two at-bats, one of which was a very easy out, which is not normally him and I went up to him after the second out and I said, ‘Hey, are you changing your approach?,' " Eldredge said. "He looked at me and smiled and said, ‘No, coach, I'm good,' and next time he came up, bam, base hit, so he just has a nice confidence about himself and he knows where he's at."

Higashionna, who bats and throws right-handed, has driven in seven runs on the year. He's managed three doubles and one triple and has walked six times. Higashionna leads the league in stolen bases with 15.

"He brings energy, he brings confidence and we don't have captains, but he is one of those leader guys for our team. He's not necessarily the verbal leader, but he's just the guy that gets out there and gets the job done," Eldredge said.

Eldredge noted that Higashionna's style of leadership is more on the laid back side.

"You know how you have guys that are just intense – like a Pete Rose where everything is intense – he's not. He's very lax, very comfortable and an easy-going type of player," Eldredge described.

Defensively, Higashionna has played a steady second base through the season for the Chargers.

"He's fairly solid on defense. Every once in a while he will bobble a ball or miss a throw, but for the most part he's fairly solid defensively and holds it down. The first half of the season he had quite a few double plays that he was involved in, but I don't recall that many in the second half, but overall he does well as an up-the-middle guy; He gives us what we need," Eldredge said.

After a 3-6 start to the season – including a pair of three-game losing skids -- Pearl City has won five of its last seven games.

"It's nice because we're playing our best ball right now and it's good timing," Eldredge said.

The Chargers (8-8) qualified for their first state tournament since 2022, when it was held at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui. They claimed fifth place at states that year. This year's Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Championships takes place from May 14-17 at UH-Manoa's Les Murakami Stadium.

Hinano Bautista

Mililani softball  •   #00  P/OF  Freshman

While the Mililani softball team's sluggers got much of the notoriety with their display of power in Saturday night's OIA title game, a freshman pitcher supplied the other half of the championship-winning formula.

Hinano Bautista, a 5-foot-7 left-handed pitcher, went 3-0 in the circle for the Trojans in their run to their first league crown since 2017. Bautista pitched every inning of all three games, including a five-hitter in Saturday's championship game against Kapolei.

In three games in as many days, Bautista allowed just five earned runs. In 17 innings of work, she struck out 12 batters and walked just five. It was just the coming out party that veteran Mililani coach Rose Antonio envisioned for her emerging freshman ace.

"You always want to have a good pitcher that can throw for you, hit their spots and throws strikes and have the ability to let our defense make plays, too," Antonio said. "A pitcher is a big part of a team, it's like the quarterback."

But that wasn't the case just a few months ago, when Bautista played left field on the Trojans' junior varsity team during the fall sports season.

"She did not pitch during the JV season," Antonio stated.

It was only during the winter league season that Bautista began to log some innings as a pitcher.

"They started getting her going in the winter league – I went to watch a few games and I saw her pitch and I kind of knew that by watching her pitch, that she had the potential to be our pitcher as well – so we went from there," Antonio said.

Antonio and pitching coach Walter Kaaihili slowly worked Bautista in, predominantly as a reliever.

"In the beginning, maybe the first half of the season, we had her as like a closer for us and then she evolved into a starter and then here we are. All of their success is because of coach Walter Kaaihili, he's the one that is working with them," Antonio said.

Bautista made her first start on Apr. 5 in a mercy-rule shortened 17-1 win at Nanakuli. She pitched three of the four innings and allowed one run on two hits. Bautista struck out two and walked none to pick-up her first win.

In her very next outing, Bautista held Campbell to one run on four hits in an 11-1 five-inning win.

"She works hard and she has a positivity about her that I saw from the very beginning and that's what I really like about her. She continues to work hard and whatever position she plays, she goes all out for it – all out kids do – and she's very fun to be around, too," Antonio said.

Mililani finished the regular season with an 11-1 record and as the top seed out of the Western Division. It had a first-round bye Wednesday before opening the postseason with a 14-1 win over Waianae in five innings. Bautista registered a season-high seven strikeouts against three walks and allowed one run on four hits to get the win.

In Friday's 7-4 semifinal win over Leilehua, Bautista limited the Mules to four runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. It is her only seven-inning complete game this spring.

"As a I freshman I like her energy and again, her positivity. She really wants it and you can see how she plays and she doesn't look like a freshman out there but she is and she's been doing a good job for us," Antonio said.

Antonio said Bautista has a repertoire that includes a riser, curve, screw ball and a change-up.

"She throws a heavy ball. She does have the velocity, I think, more than other pitchers have and then coming from the left side, you rarely see lefties pitching," Antonio said.

Beyond her pitching ability, Antonio pointed to Bautista's presence in the pitching circle as a key factor in her success.

"She looks really poised and I mean, with that mask on she look pretty mean," Antonio laughed. She's really poised out there, focused and in tune with what she's doing."

Bautista kept her poise after some early bumps in the road during Saturday's title game. She retired the first two batters she faced, but then gave up back-to-back two-out home runs to Kapolei's third and fourth batters.

After that, however, the ‘Canes were kept off the scoreboard.

"She was able to flush it and move forward and let the defense take care of the ball for her," said Antonio, alluding to three inning-ending double plays turned by the Trojans in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

"She has a good defense behind her and she lets them make the plays, that's what they're there for, but I think when she came in (the dugout after the first inning), she probably talked to coach Walter about it and then (Kauilani Garcia), our catcher, she was out there settling her down and talking to her and keeping her focused, so she tends not to worry about what happened and just moves forward," Antonio said.

Antonio also made sure to credit Garcia, a senior, for her guidance of Bautista from behind the plate.

"She's the one calming the pitchers down or letting them know ‘hey, you're doing this,' or ‘you're doing that' and ‘just do you.' She's been a great asset there behind the plate," Antonio said.

In addition to her pitching prowess, Bautista can also swing a bat a little bit. Despite battling in the ninth spot, she has hit five home runs and carries a .379 batting average.

"She's capable of putting a bunt down for a base hit, she's capable of moving the runners around and she's capable of hitting the long ball," Antonio said.

Bautista has also taken her share of pitches in the batter's box. She has drawn more walks (12) than she has recorded hits (11). Bautista also had 13 runs batted in and 13 runs scored on the year.

"She's a very disciplined hitter. I mean, if you have a lot of walks that means you're tracking the ball and you have a good eye at the plate, but one thing with her, I know she always wants to run and not be taken out for a courtesy runner, but sometimes I have to tell her, ‘no, it's OK, just go back to the dugout,' but she always wants to be out there," Antonio said.

With the win Saturday, the Trojans claimed their 12th OIA championship and their seventh under Antonio.

"I'm very proud of them thus far and our team really works hard in practice and I tell them just to enjoy the moment, enjoy the ride and we'll go from there, but most of all I'm very proud of them," Antonio said.

Mililani will have a seeded berth and a first-round bye in the 12-team DataHouse/HHSAA Division I State Championships, which runs from May 14-17 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
