Monarchs battle past Bulldogs to remain unbeaten

MILILANI - Syles Choy accounted for three total touchdowns as the Monarchs improved to 2-0 after a hard fought battle with the Kaimuki Bulldogs Friday afternoon.

Scoring on all sides of the ball, the Monarchs sealed the victory with a score of 31-21 on the new field turf at John Kauinana Stadium.

"Feels really good," said Damien coach Eddie Klaneski. "We're just happy we can come out with a victory."

Kaimuki got on the board first in the 7:56 mark of the first quarter. Junior quarterback Kainalu Spencer rolled out and connected with senior Zac Bastatas for a 39 yard touchdown pass. Bastatas also made a 4 yard reception for a touchdown later in the game.

"We're trying to put ourselves back on the map," said Klaneski. "We've been having a few bad seasons."

Damien responded with a drive led by junior quarterback Syles Choy. With 1:11 left in the first quarter, Choy finished a drive with a 1 yard quarter back keeper for a touchdown. Choy would call his own number again in the second half. Unable to find any receivers open down field, Choy scrambled and navigated his way through the defense for an 18 yard score.

"We have so much brotherhood and heart on this team," said Choy. "I think we can take anybody on this island."

The Monarchs would score again at the 1:20 mark until the half, this time with on the defensive side of the ball. Damien junior Jameson White returned an interception down the sideline for 52 yards. About a minute later, Damien would add on a field goal from senior Lyle Alloy-Glover for 25 yards. That would seal the half with a score of 17-7.

"...all the people that supported us; our family, our friends, our alumni," stated Klaneski. "We are just really happy and excited to come out victorious."

Choy would add to his highlight reel performance with a five yard touchdown throw connecting with senior Bryson Dalmacio. That score coming at the 7:26 mark of the third quarter.

"Syles is a second year starter," said Klaneski. "We expect good things from him."

Kaimuki would respond with a 39 yard pass from Spencer connecting with Fano Tuisilla. Spencer would finish with three touchdown passes for the night.

"Damien is back," exclaimed Choy. "(Damien) got a new legacy," he continued.
