Punahou boys, Pearl City girls leading after Day One


Three-time defending boys champ Punahou and OIA girls champion Pearl City lead after first day of the Chevron/HHSAA Wrestling Championships at Blaisdell Center Arena.

The Buffanblu boys lead second-place Lahainaluna, 96 points to 78.5, followed by Kamehameha-Kapalama (63), Mililani (62) and Campbell (45.5).

Defending state champions Joshua Terao (Mid-Pacific), Cassidy Oshiro (Maryknoll), Todd Murakawa (Punahou), Chanse Uyeda (Lahainaluna), Bryan Peralta (Punahou), Zachary Hernandez (Punahou) and Akoakoa Paleka-Kennedy are all still in contention.

On the girls side of the draw, Pearl City leads defending state champion Punahou by 14.5 points, followed by Aiea (53), Lahainaluna (46) and Campbell (39).

Securing spots in the semifinals are defending girls state champions Megan Aina (Kamehameha-Hawaii), Quinn Nagatani (Mililani), Sam Higa ('Aiea), Bree Rapoza (Kamehameha-Kapalama), Mindy Chow (Punahou), Darcie Manning-O'Brien ('Aiea) and Sanoe Spencer (Pearl City).

The tournament concludes tomorrow with matches beginning tomorrow from 10:30 a.m. at Blaisdell. Wrestler introductions that precede the finals are set to start at approximately 3 p.m.
